How is it possible for two seemingly, very opposite people (who are of different faiths, as well) to develop such a strong attraction and closeness to each other? Is it because those two people are complementary to each other?

Attraction is a physiological reaction to "chemistry". Chemistry could care less about stuff like religions and education, social back grounds and etc. It's one of those things in life that don't have to be logical or make sense, they just exist as they are ... raw energy.

My partner and I are polar opposites. Completely different careers, lifestyles and religions. We get by just fine. Opposites attract, one might say.
