Can anyone describe their 'runner's high'? I run 20-35 miles a week and never get a "high." I get periods where I mentally space out and realize a lot of time has passed, but no eurphoria. NO armchair googlers please! People w/ personal expirences only. Thanks!!

I used to never get runner's high either until I started running long distances. The first time I got it was when I ran 8 miles for the first time. After that, I usually get runner's high after about 4 to 5 miles of continuous running. I have also felt it doing laps at a swimming pool, but it takes me a lot longer. How much exercise is necessary before it happens depends on the individual, but most people I run into tell me something similar.

The exact experience seems to differ from person to person. Some people say that it just sort of happens without them realizing it. Others say that it's like a light bulb that suddenly goes on in your brain where your entire world looks brighter and more brilliant somehow. For me, it's like when you turn on a fluorescent light bulb and it just sort of flickers for a while before it suddenly shines.

The feeling I get is this sense of sharpened perception and the feeling that I could run forever. It only happens when I can run at least 8 miles comfortably at a pretty good clip, usually during early morning runs, in places where distractions are minimal. It probably won't happen if you're in a crowd, or if there is a bunch of traffic noise or other things that intrude into your revery.

Right now I'm just getting back into running after an 8 month layoff, so no runner's highs for a while. I'm still in the "this really sucks" mode at the moment.

I think it can be at anytime/ any speed... when you stop thinking "I just want to get to -place-" and can enjoy the world around you and all of the magic your body is capable of.
I also get into the mode where I don't even realize what is going on.
I guess its just like any other high... you can't really put it into perspective.

Your breathes are deeper. Your face feels flush. It literally feels like you just came. I find it easier to attain running intervals at 5k -5% pace. A long run over 1 hour long can also do it.
