New York City Fire Department, is a paid civil service position a that can only be gotten by passing a test, physical exam and a psychological exam and also a strenght test. It Almost all of the small towns out side of NYC have volunteer departments. Go to the nearest Fire house where you live if' you're outside of NYC and ask them how to become a volunteer. You would have to live there so that you were available when the time came to answer an alarm

Contrary to popular belief, there are volunteer firemen in new york city. I dont know the exact number of companies, but there is one in the Bronx (www.aviation3.com) and severl in staten island. They are not actually part of the FDNY, and I dont know in what capacity they operate, but they are there nonetheless.

Ninety percent of everything is showing up. Visit a fire station and ask them questions about their profession; find out if your state has a conservation corps; or if there's a volunteer fire organization near you..

Go to your local firehouse and ask them. If you're in the city, chances are they're all paid guys, but other places in the state likely have volunteers.
