I have two herniated (Slipped) disks in my neck, I have had this injury for 5 years now, my neurosurgen keeps telling me to have surgery and have the disks removed and replaced with artificial. Ive talked to a few people about the surgery and the people ive talked to that have had it say not to because they did and where worse off after having it. Ive been in gut wrenching pain for 5 years now and on pain meds as well, im sick of the meds and sick of the pain, what should i do? have the surgery or not, the thing that worries me the most is that they will have to go through my throat to replace the disks and ive heard nothing but horror stories about the surgery. Any websites that I can get information from?, any advice?, any help would be much appreciated.

Hello, My brother has degenerative disk disease and he had to have that same surgery where they replace the disks w/ titanium, and to be honest the poor guy has had nothing but problems and as of right now he cannot use his left arm it is completely dead it hurts him really bad and he has alot of numbing and pins and needles type of thing going on in his hand and he cant even pick up a pencil its sad, so if I were you I would really think hard on deciding to have the surgery or not because most often it makes it worse, I have had 2 shoulder surgeries and I am worse off than I was before and I regret it everyday and I have to live with this severe pain for the rest of my life. So please do your homework and make an educated decision and a decision based on the theory of you being in more pain than you are now for the rest of your life. The surgeons just want your money they dont care if they f**k you up for life. Can you deal with that kind of pain?? I wish you the very best good luck sweetie!!!

Like you I hear of very few people who had successful surgery. The new artificial discs are supposed to be much better than in the past. However if I were faced with the same decision I would first seek out ALL alternatives. Chiropractics, massage therapy, acupuncture, or a pain management specialist. Cutting me open is always my last choice. Good luck in your very difficult decision.

My husband had problems since he was 15 from jumping out of a moving car after an argument with his brother. He thought he could walk away without injury.

After many years of pain he had surgery a year ago in Glendale, California to replace 2 discs and get titanium pins. He recovered very quickly, was able to go back to work within 4 weeks and has no pain. He was on antidepressants, pain medications and ambien for years, now he takes nothing. If you have good insurance, please consider it further since the pain is ruining your quality of life .

I've had back and neck surgery twelve times now. I have twelve cadaver and twelve of my own bones in my neck and back. I have 32 wires and 32 screws in my back and neck. It's going to happen gain I have osteo-arthritis in the severe degenerative stages.
There are no artificial discs at this time that I know of, right now, only fusion that's for sure.
You have a choice, pain and drugs like me or surgery. It's not perfect but, it's better then the pain.

I might get a moment opinion. Even for some thing as minor as that, the best way I seem at it, any time you have got to reduce into some thing must be a final motel. I do not know so much approximately carpal tunnel, however relying on what you do this precipitated it, might be see if there may be bodily cure or some thing you'll do to improve the ones muscle mass or some thing.

I broke my back 18 years ago...L1,L3 & L5...and refused surgery also. However, the medical field has davanced alot since then. I don't like living in pain and I have to assume your's is worse than mine. I would seriously consider the surgery. Me...after 18 years I just deal with it. Best of luck.
