Nerve Conduction Test Painful

I had bilateral carpal tunnel operation just before Christmas...wonderful timing but at least they were done! I had the nerve conduction test done a few months earlier to determine if I had Carpal tunnel or not. It's not something that causes any deal of pain. As far as I can remember, the nurse wiped down my hands then attached little loops over (some) of my fingers...these were attached to a machine and when the test was done she pressed a little pad, which was attached to the machine, onto different parts of my hand and she also did up my arms as I also have elbow probs. The guy sat at the machine and just turned some dials and stuff which did something like sending a small electric current through the loops and pad and it picked up when I felt it...it's not really painful...more like a strong tingle which may make your arm/hand jerk very slightly, and it lasts for a split second. I could see the results on the monitor as it was being done and it was interesting to see how the lines were moving about and reacting to my reactions! At no time were needles inserted into me!

I can well understand your concerns/apprehension as I had them myself, but believe me, it's nothing to worry about. If you need any info on the operation drop me a line and I can tell you what that entailed...

Good Luck!

btw...I am in the UK so it may be a different test if you are in another country.

I've had a lot of different medical tests done in my life and the nerve conduction test was about the least painful.

The 'needles' they use are actually acupuncture needles. They are not any bigger than a human hair and you can barely feel them. You may have some twinges when they run current through them into your nerves but, it isn't anything bad.

Just try to relax and meditate. You will be fine.

I hope this helps.

I to have had the test done twice and once it was painful it really depends on the nerve damage the more damage the less pain. They stick you with needles into your nerves I suggest getting it done. I had surgery over 10 years ago. And have had very little problems since then. The procedure is painful but not unbearable. Good Luck

I've had this done and they stick a needle in you and send electricity into your nerves, which means into your muscle sometimes. They do one needle at a time, and the pain will vary depending on whether or not it goes into the muscle and where on the body. I didn't have too much problem on my upper arm, but when they got into the muscle in my hand that pain was out of this world!

I had this done for peripheral neuropathy they hook you up to some type of machine that sends a electrical stimulus into your nerves they start out low voltage, you can't even feel it then they get progressively higher until you think your holding on to a live electric wire it will cause you to start sweating. This is a necessary procedure it's a bit uncomfortable but it is tolerable

I've had this done on my neck, my arms and my legs a number of times. The "needles" are very small and don't worry the feeling is minimal. The test isn't comfortable to say the least but, it's not painful either.
Just grunt and bare it to get through it, it's over before it begins.
