I'm 12, I go to bed at around midnight, and wake up around 7. If I continue this lifestyle, can and how long would it take for me to die from lack of sleep? How much time will it take off my life?

Ok the most basic answer is yes you can die from NO sleep.

The amount you are sleeping you will not die from this per se. At your age and from the situation you are describing you could be getting enough sleep because people's needs vary from 4- 12hrs of sleep a day with the average being 8-10hrs.

If you aren't getting enough then you are more likely to die from fatigue in a dangerous situation i.e. driving and while lack of sleep is not the actual cause of death it is a contributing factor.

People who continuously ignore their need for proper restorative sleep will get sick more often, have high rates of disease and find themselves suffering from more mental illness and stress.

The largest concern at your age isn't dying but setting up a life long pattern of sleeping disorders. Because I didn't sleep properly in my early years I have multiple sleeping disorders. One reason I am awake on yahoo at 3AM. Now is the time you are creating patterns for your body to follow in years to come and when you are 20, 30, 40 etc you will regret this.

I have done this and I wish I could go back and change things. Now I have DSPS or delayed sleep phase syndrome. It means that everyday of my life I don't have normal sleep time. Instead of operating on a 24hrs cycle my body runs on about 27-28hr cycle and at the beginning of the month I can sleep at night but by the end of the month I can't fall asleep until mid afternoon.

Sleep is valuable and even if you don't develop a sleeping disorder you are still robbing yourself of valuable sleep causing a sleep deficit that could haunt you as grow up.

In terms of how long it takes to die, we are talking about months with no sleep. Eventually your body simply falls apart and you will suffer multiple organ failure and death. Though this is very rare and usually relates to severe undiagnosed sleep, neurological and emotional disturbances.

Nope, the old wisdom was that lack of sleep can kill you. Now they know that persons can (and have) lived days and in one case lived years without sleep. The body will force you into a micro sleep (the kind of sleeping us adults get when we drive long distances and we suddenly look up and realize we are still driving) I work in a long term nursing care facility and work with a client who sleeps two or three times a week at about three to five hours at a time.

7 hours a night is not lack of sleep... try going only 5 hours total for three days. third day there is lots of confusion and caffeine involved.

oo interesting! I don't know. I mean you could go insane definitly and get very very angry. Yeah i reckon you could. I got nothing to back that up but i reckon your organs or something might crap out. I mean you need to eat, drink, sleep. Basic needs. Maybe it would put a strain on your heart or something.

I have nerver heard of a reported of the COD (Cause Of Death) being sleep deprivation. But symptoms can include low blood sugar, delirium, and extreme fatigue. you really should consult your doctor if you need a medication to assist with sleep deprivation.
