Help. I am scared. I have an abcessed tooth under a crown on my molar. I went to the dentist on tuesday, and now it is Thursday night, or Friday morning and I am still in agony. I have antibiotics and pain killers, but I am taking motrin every couple of hours. I have never hurt like this, and my jaw is even a bit swollen. I have a root canal on Tuesday, will I be in this much agony until then? does it hurt so bad because it has a crown over it? Please give me suggestions. I am tired of hurting and crying... Going through childbirth was better than this.

The pain will go away soon, and, the swelling will subside: try some clove oil for the pain, it works!

I empathize with you as I am going through the same thing right now. Last weekend was hell with agonizing pain, throbbing jaw, no sleep. I was on 800 mg. Motrin twice a day and an antibiotic. The Motrin would wear off in a couple of hours and I would have to wait 10 for more. It takes about 2/3 days for the antibiotic to help the swelling. I got only a start of the root canal on Tues, but will finish on next Tues. Too much infection and too much pain to continue last Tues. My dentist said the bad tooth emits gases that the crown holds in, hence the terrible pain and the feeling of pressure like it will explode. I agree, childbirth pain is a breeze compared to this ordeal. Hope you feel better by now.

Wow I had that same exact thing. Except for i didnt have a crown. boii was it hard to take the pain. I had an abcess and it got really infected and my whole jaw swole up and it hurt up into my ear. It was like that for about a week then it went away. I never went to the dentist cuz i didnt have a chance to. About a year later it came back again and i got a root canal and if felt wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better. It was still a little sore because of the stuff they had to do. So just hang in there. Oh i tried some numbing stuff and it worked pretty well to take away the pain not the swelling though.

Sorry to note the suffering that you are going through. Till the infection is cleared, the pain will be there. But to help you cope better with the pain, I will suggest a few alternatives.
1) Chamomilla 6C - Homeopathic medicine in pill or liquid form.
2) Rescue Remedy - Liquid
Take as often as you need. They are not antibiotics and so you should continue to take the medicines prescribed by your dentist. They simply help you with the pain.
Please note that this advice is given in good faith without any commerical motives and without assuming any liability for any problems which you may face. Best wishes.

I am assuming he gave you clindamycin as an antibiotic. Make sure you keep taking it. It does take 3-4 days for the pain from the infection to subside. After the root canal your pain will be almost gone. Call the Dentis and ask for something stronger than Motrin. You should be taking 4 motrins (800mg) at a time... ask for Percocet or something stronger!

This sounds dumb, but I went through a lot of tooth pain and the one thing I found that helped was a rubber tipped handle they sell in a lot of grocery stores, [or you can get one from your dentist]. The more you massage the gum the more blood will run through it and the less pain you will have. I still use mine, years later. Good luck.

No,it is not because of crown.Abcess is an infection and they are painfull. It is like a big zit with yellow head.Once you pup it,it feels better. So the dentist has to open it up,get in there thrugh your tooth.Drain the infection.Once it is done, you'll feel much better. But first you do have to take your antibiotics and finish them all.It takes 48 hours for the antibiotics to start working.Actualy look forward to Tusday. After that you will feel much better.Good luck.

I just got mine out a week ago, and was in the same situation as you but I found a solution. Sleep with high pillows so that the blood doesn't rush up there during the night. If you find that it hurts more during the day right when you get up. This is the solution for you. I hope that helps.
