I won this car on ebay.

I called the guy and he said the gasket is "almost blown". The oil may need changed soon, but it is not a milky or of a gray substance and nothing is smoking under the hood. He said to put water in it and drive it home (4 hour drive).

Should I believe this?

If the Head gasket is in fact almost blown I would not be taking it anywhere. As soon as it gets on the open road you may find water starting to get into the oil and / or oil getting into the water Of cause big loss of power so you may have to fill up more than once Ask him for $500 of the price and have it trucked home - if you still really want it

Sorry just read the Ad Bail out while you can as well as a stuffed motor the car has rust in all the wrong places

I guess that kinda like being "almost pregnant" --- Head gasket is part of engine which suffers when Water in Radiator boils out or is not replaced! -- Check for OVERHEATING-- The gauge!!
(The Gasket is a pressed piece of cardboard/rubber, It serves as a lining between the top of the Engine where the oil circulates to keep the pistons & lifters lubricated..and the bottom of the engine)
Run the Car for 20 minutes and see if there is any STEAM coming out of the top of Engine Block - if so -- shut it down and refuse to take the Car!! Unless the seller made these statements before you bid & won on this dog car, ebay will stand for your rights as a consumer. Don't pay till you see the car, and bring a mechanic with you -- its no bargain if it costs more than its worth to be driveable.

The smoke would come out of the tail pipe as mostly white smoke all the time, it takes time for the water to mix as you would expect.
A blown head gasket can be confirm by a compression test.
Four hours is too long a trip, consider towing it.

Good Luck

I wouldn't want to drive for 4 hours on a blown gasket. Since you really don't know how bad the gasket is. It could leak a little or a lot. But it is cheap to replace and cost almost nothing to fix. How about driving it to a local mechanic shop to get it fixed then drive it home? Since you'll want to get it fixed any how.

I think he's being as truthful as he can. He believes the head gasket isn't completely blown because it does run, but he also states that it is blown. So he's being truthfull about the car.

But it has 341000 miles on it. Stay away. Far away.
