Bought a 94' Nissan Altima and altough it issupposed to have 29 mpg highway, I tested it over 3 months and I get about 20 mpg!

Can there be a mechanical reason for this? A leak? Anything I can do?

you might want to try having it tuned up really well even though it seems like its running really good right now, the spark plugs can have such a large gap between them that it causes it to use a lot more gas just to get it to run,and that will cut way down on the mileage a lot,id have all this checked, especially and it being used, you never know how good it was maintained before you got it,those are good cars, and normally get a lot of miles to the gallon,so yours should do a lot better than that it is right now, anything that has to do with a tune up will help it,good luck with it.

Fuel mileage may vary. First thing do you think some wear may have happened in 13 years of driving? Did you do a Highway only set the cruse-control 30 mile two fill up run? Right next to the freeway ramp, Fill till the pump handle clicks drive 15, 20 miles turn around and drive back and fill till it clicks off again same pump if possable. Miles divided by gallons. I prove to owners all the time around town driving really uses more fuel. Spark plugs air filters clean oil good quality tires wax job and no loose body work catching air. And common sence will get you the most gas mileage use over drive turned on too. Drive like you have an egg under your right foot accelerate smoothly. Good Luck to you DODGE MAN and Altima owner

Clogged air filter, clogged catilytic converter, leaking fuel lines, using the gas pedal too much, dirty, old fouled spark plugs, old spark plug wires, damaged fuel injectors, out of alignement timing belt, underinflated tires...... are just a few of the things that might be causing the problem.
