First of all your tattooist should have explained all that to you...
but since he didn't here is a list of things that will fade a tat.
sun, tanning beds, chlorine in swimming pool, any moisturizer
that has lanolin or petroleum or has a fragrance, lakes, streams, and ponds have bacteria in them that may cause infection......
I always tell people that it's best to get their tat before the summer, but no one thinks of that until they start shedding there clothes.
Cover it while tanning.................after healing, in a month, use sunblock.

A tattoo changes your skin by 2 ways. 1) The actual ink in the tattoo and 2) The reaction the ink has with your melatonin and natural pigmentation in your skin.
The sun changes the pigmentation in your skin and can have adverse effects on the color of the ink they used. In addition, because the ink causes reactions in your skin it creates a low grade infection which pushes the ink further to the top of your skin. Since the ink is closer to the top it is more succeptable to the sun bleaching the ink. Some inks are even made of metals and because they are closer to the top of your skin if you go tanning it could cause the ink to burn and scold your skin.
It's better for the longevity of your tattoo, the safety and health of your skin and your comfort to cover your tattoo carefully.
Good luck.

A new tattoo is basically a scar and it needs to heal. The skin is irritated. You should always apply sunscreen, at least # 30 to any tattoo's. The sun will fade tattoo's. I have six tattoo's and, they still look colorful and new!!

The sun will fade the new ink. Cover it up when you tan.

They fade... and if you are tanning they are more likely to burn than the rest of your skin. It's because the first layer of your skin has been abraded. You can put a little sunscreen on it too once it's healed a little.
Good Luck

you're supposed to keep your tattoo out of the sun forever. there is absolutely nothing worse for your tattoo than exposing it to the harmful uv rays of the sun. with time they will break down the ink in your tattoo and it will look horrible, so will your leathery cancer skin. sunscreen protects your skin from cancer but not your tattoo from being broken down.

Not only will it fade, but you would also be exposing punctured/new skin (basically a wound) to the sun... ouch!
