Let me tell you I would never work for someone who reported my tips. Never. What I make comes from the customer and it an added bonus incentive, not proper income. I make $35 to $50 on a good night plus minimum wage and a free meal. I am happy with it. Some complain that they don't make enough as in $80 to $120 a night but own cars, houses and such. Don't get that complaining. They then don't understand it is unfair to pay a cashier $7-8, a chambermaid less than $10 and a receptionist less than $11.

Servers can be and usually are paid in less than minimum wage, the difference is supposed to be made up by gratuities.

Seriously Paul Q? Only 10% on very good service? That's ridiculous! If it's very good service you should tip 20% or at the very least 15%. Never 10%! That's just cheap...very, very cheap! The majority of waiters and waiteresses rely on tips to live. That's their income! If you don't eat out that much you don't need to be such a tight-wad when it comes to the tip! I'm not a waitress, but it's just common decency!

Servers can be paid less than minimum if the company/restaurant makes less than so much a year. I legally paid my employees $3.10 an hour. But I reported their tips to my accountant which got them up to minimum wage. However, it is illegal to pay nothing at all.

yes, they are paid approximently $2.65 per hour. However, it must be understood that here in America tips are expected and paid at 15 %to 20 % depending on how well the service was.

yes, but i think they live on tips to make up the difference..the tips are to insure promptness. and good service...something a lot of waiters have lost sight of...so when i see poor service they get nothing..but i will tip ten percent on very good service...but this don't happen too often..but I don't eat out a lot...once in a blue moon as my wife is a better cook then these overpriced restaurants..and the food is fresher..
