I have 5 tattoos. I wash my new tatts with antibacterial soap like Dial, pat dry and use lubriderm unscented lotion. Use it often to keep the skin soft, and prevent a hard scab from forming.
Dont scratch and pick at a new tattoo, if it feels dry or itchy, put lotion on it.

Step One
Keep the bandage on the tattoo for at least two hours after the work is complete (or longer, depending on the tattoo artist's instructions).
Step Two
Remove the bandage very carefully and throw it away. This allows your skin to breathe and begin the healing process. Do not rebandage the tattoo.
Step Three
Put a drop of mild antibiotic soap on your hand and lightly wash the tattoo. Gently pat it dry with a washcloth (not a paper towel) taking care not to rub it.
Step Four
Dab an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin) on the cleaned area. Do not use an ointment that contains zinc as it may cause an adverse reaction.
Step Five
Continue to lightly apply antibiotic ointment to your tattooed skin for the first few days, then switch to a plain skin lotion that is free of dye, perfume, lanolin, Vitamin E, aloe or alcohol.
Step Six
Expose your healing skin to air as much as possible but avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Step Seven
Avoid getting a lot of water on your new tattoo - showers are OK, but no swimming or baths for a few weeks.
Tips & Warnings
Resist scratching the skin or picking at scabs, no matter how much it itches.
Wear clean, loose and comfortable clothing over the tattooed area. Your skin should heal in about two weeks.
Apply sunblock to your tattoo after it has healed, to help prevent burns and fading.

Some use neosporin triple antibiotic, but DO not use this because it, as a antibacterial, will decrease the quality of the tattoo by thinking it is a foreign particulate matter and decrease the color and clarity of it- looks at the dyes as a antigen or bacteria. Use vaseline with bacitracin...

Didn't your artist give you instructions?
I gently cleaned it twice a day with Ivory soap, then applied a tiny bit of unscented Luberderm. Don't pick the scabs, don't scratch it, don't rub it.
My tattoo came out beautifully, and still looks great.

There's a product called Tattoo Goo that is supposed to be really good.
Basically any type of ointment would be fine; Neosporin (sp?) I've heard is good as well
