ok i have a very LOVABLE pitbull, hes is GREAT! he protects me,sleeps with me,says hello to everyone that walks into the door, and does tricks!! but everybody thinks "omg, its a pitbull, its going to bite me" but thats not true, its the way you breed a pitbull, you can breed it correctly or incorrectly. make it a good house dog or make it fight. the ones that are out bitting people are the ones badly breed!so the question is how do i make other people understand?

Look, you can't change people's ideas, you can only teach them the truth. Look at prejudice in humans, stupid, right? Well, same in dogs.

Sounds like you have him really well trained. If these people are friends of yours, they will come around eventually ...or they may not. People are going to think about the pitbull, in general, as an unpredictable and dangerous animal no matter what you say. It's just part of having one. I've known a number of pitbull companions and I know how sweet and adorable they can be.

But it's a dog that has actually been BANNED from certain towns and that's a pretty big hurdle to overcome. I'd say keep working with him and teach him the more adorable and sweet tricks that show his soft side.

Tell that to the parents of a 2 year old that has been torn to sheds by one of those little angels.
In a city close by there was a pitbull {4 y/o, he was never mistreated or anything} that was put outside to go potty and snapped, jumped an 8 foot fence and attacked a 2 y/o girl in a stroller on the way to the park. Her parents were simply walking along talking and suddenly there was a dog trying to tear their baby apart. The owner said he was the sweetest dog you ever saw. He was completely shocked when it happened. The owner willingly had him put down and said he would never own one again! Fortunatly the baby lived.
I saw what one of those dogs did to a poodle that was just on a walk with his owner. It took the poodles leg right off!
I wouldn't trust your "lovable" pibull for 1 second!

I love pitbulls. I'm actually more afraid of small dogs than big dogs because they are more likely to bite out of fear. In my state, there are cities that are making it illegal to own a 'bully' breed. I think that's unfair and biased. I understand your frustration, its along the same lines as racism to me. All dogs are different, just like people. You can have aggressive pit bulls and you can also have aggressive yorkies. Look at all the people who need help on here trying to get their little dogs to stop biting them.

The only way I know of is education. Learn all you can about the breed and then tell everyone you know. You might be able to bring your dog somewhere and let people get to know the breed. Check your local pet store or maybe your town hall. They might let you have a small demonstration about pit bulls. Also look online for a local pitbull organization you can join. I'm sure there's a way to get people educated on pitbulls.

It's hard to make people understand when the news reports are always the 'best dog anyone could ask for' who does the attacking. They are always reported by the owners as never having a mean bone in their body and not sure why the nieghbor is missing his arm or face.
So many shady stupid, back yard breeders pump these dogs out with out a drop of concern about pedigrees and temperaments. They can't see outside the box for breeding and these dogs are very capable of just 'snapping' for no reason. Temperaments can be inherited. Not always caused by bad owners. No sense in trying to change the world to love your dog. When you chose this breed, you chose to live with the stigma that comes with it.

I completley agree with you. Its not the breed, its how the dog was raised and bred. Some people will never understand that, and they're just ignorant and shouldn't have the pleasure of meeting your wonderful dog anyway! The only thing you can do is explain that your dog is friendly and that the fact that he is a pit bull doesn't make him aggressive. But the truth is some people just will never understand that.

the only reason i am a little nervous around Pitts is the damage they could cause! They are so many bad owners that I won't take the chance.

People should choose dogs based on activity level and temperment. Everybody should choose a dog that matches your personality and activity level not only looks! Every puppy is cute but when he's full grown it's different. I have no issues with Pitts or Rotts...just bad owners!

I myself have a great love for pit bulls and adore them! but when asked about my dog, I tell them shes half pit bull everyone gets scared and cautious its crazy, just because some a badly bred should not entitle the whole breed to be "under attack" :(

I have tried to tell people that many times over. I have had many pit bulls as a pet, and none of mine were mean or aggressive towards anyone. I have always said it is how you raise them, and treat them that makes them mean. It makes me mad when I see people out there training these dogs to fight. As with any animal you train it to attack it will, you train it to obey and it will. When you abuse an animal is when it turns on people. If you raise it with love, and show the dog affection and let it enter act with people it will be a lovable pet.

and if only people would realize that there are millions of pit bull types and if they were really the monsters they are portrayed as no one could walk down the street. BSL is not the way to go. also, many "pit bull attacks" are later to be found not to be pit bulls. I hate the media; i wish they would report the truth.

EDIT: tammy M has a fabulous suggestion.

some thoughts...on weekends, especially now that the weather is nice...especially if your pit really seems to get along with ALL people (you cant try this if you are uncertain about the dogs attitude towards certain types of people, like men, or if it is aggressive towards dogs...stuff like this)take your dog out in the public, get an orange hunting vest made for dogs (to attract attention) pin a note on your shirt, front and back that says...ask me about "your pits name"....
this gives you the opportunity to show people the good side of pits. let them see how friendly they can be, how intelligent and how well trained...(one super way to do this is put him through what is called the canine good citizen class...when he passes the test, he will be allowed to go into nursing homes and work with troubled kids...you will have physical proof that pits are as good as any other dog, cause you get a certificate) good luck.
