I had this problem with a new computer. Some how when it was assembled and loaded with the software, the wrong Windows sticker was installed on the computer.

I actually had to do an activate software and get the telephone help and explain to them what happened with my new computer and they had to activate the software with different numbers after I read off the sticker numbers on the computer.

This doesn't always mean you have illegal software, especially if it is a new computer.

You must have chose to download and install the Automatic Update 'Windows Genuine Advantage Notification'. No other way, can the message appear. I got it too. I then reinstalled Windows, then unchecked that update and chose never ot download it again. I'm not bothered by them messages no more.

Call Microsoft and tell them that the company you bought the PC from is distributing illegal copies. First contact the company, tell them to sort it out. If they don't, contact Microsoft.

It would seem the problem is that your copy of Windows XP was installed using a product key known to be widely distributed, and therefore banned by Microsoft to avoid further piracy.

If this is new and purchased from a vendor, You should either contact the vendor and inform them, or contact Microsoft Support directly if your vendor is no help.

If this was sold to you by an individual, it's safe to say that person did not purchase Windows XP legally, and you will have to purchase a license from Microsoft.

Well it sounds like your Windows copy is not legit. If you bought it from a big company like Dell or Toshiba, contact them immediately about this. or whoever you bought this new computer from. If they don't help you contact Microsoft, as i'm sure they'll want to hear about this company selling illegal copies and i think they'll help you out. If you got yourself into this mess then there are sites that deal with this, and as far as i know, we're not allowed to talk about this here. Check out the torrent sites and so on, good luck.

Where did you get the OS from? It's probably not a genuine copy. Or, it could be that it's not been registered after installation. If you have the CD and key, re-install.

Contact the seller. If they do not help you report them to the police and Microsoft.

Per
http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/Reporting.mspx
There are three ways to report piracy.

Method 1: Email piracy@microsoft.com

Method 2: Call the Microsoft Anti-Piracy Hotline at
(800) RU-LEGIT.

Method 3: Go to the following web page to fill out an online reporting form: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/ReportingUs.mspx

Turning off updates is a stupid idea. Running your computer without the latest updates guarantees your computer will become infected with spyware and viruses.

Is your copy legitimate? If not then you need to get a legitimate copy. If it is, contact your PC maker. You can also try reinstalling Windows.
