We are having trouble with our 16 yr old, she wants a lot of freedom and we are having trouble letting her go and do as she pleases. She is our oldest. Any suggestions?

Has she done anything that makes you mistrust her? If not, it is not fair to keep her couped up at home. I think a decent curfew for a 16 year old is 11:00am. She is two years from being 18, so it may seem late, but it is fair. Let her know if she breaks curfew or you find out she is doing inappropriate things while she is out, you will immediately revoke privileges. Let her know this is a PRIVILEGE, not a RIGHT.

Don't let her go and do as she pleases. As hard as it is, you get to be the bad guys. She is supposed to push you for more freedom, but you are supposed to look out for her best interest. Be flexible, but stick to the consequences for rules broken. My daughters had a weeknight curfew of 10:30 and a weekend curfew of 11:30. That was readjusted if they were late. If they were late by 30mins for instance, then their curfew was 30mins earlier the next time.

Remember what you were doing when you were 16, and save her from her own experience while you can.

Im 16 and my curfew is 10. It makes sense. All stores and stuff close around 10 anyway. As for going to parties or shows or something, they say 11. It pretty much just depends on what it is I want to do. They'll just tell me when to be home.

Wow. 10:00? No way.
I'm 15 and I'm the youngest of three kids. I've been a good girl my entire life, with straight A's and only one suspension. I get angry sometimes with my mom and we have fights, but she trusts me completely. My curfew is 12:00 am. It used to be 11:30, but I asked her if I could stay until 12:00. I don't really do ANYTHING, except sit around at my boyfriends house. Yes, she trusts me to be out at 12:00 am with my boyfriend. And I'm glad. If she didn't trust me, I would be deeply hurt because I never gave her a reason to not trust me. =] I hope this helps. =]

well im going otbe 16 in the summer too. i tihnk that a girl as young as that should be home at 11:30 te latest at 12:00 on week days. most parties should end at 1 or 2 on the weekends though. so i guess no later than 1:30 on the weekends. but wat would yo udo if she comes home later than that. their has to be some kind of consequenses if she doesnt make your curfew. like no going out the next days or next week or watever else you can think of. good luck with that i know yo uonly want the best for her anyways.

Uh, I'm sixteen and my mother does not have a curfew for me. I do not pass out an excessive amount of for there to be a suite one. She simply makes it proper to the party. Like, if it is a live performance or the like, I'd be competent to stick out later. :P
