Depends if you want a flip, a handheld, etc. However (and this is not an advertisement), go to amazon.com and check it out. You can order service from there and get really good discount rates on plans. My promotional plan (which isn't up until I decide to cancel it) has been in affect for 4 years now and I pay a lot less than advertised even at tmobile.com.
And more so, on amazon.com, you get really good discounts on phones. Sometimes they even pay you! Last time I checked (a year ago?), a phone I got for free on tmobile.com (Samsung X475), amazon.com gave you $30 just for getting it.
All the fees are the same between tmobile.com and amazon.com such as activation fee, etc but the price difference is astounding.
Plus, if you already have T-Mobile service, might want to get an unlocked phone and you can get those on Amazon as well. (Motorola A1200 -Ming- with T-Mobile = WooT!)
But there's a few types of phones you can get really cheap or even for free on the T-Mobile site and same as with Amazon so it's mostly look at see what you want. They also change out phones sometimes so if you want to get something within a few months, I couldn't recommend anything right now.
