Every day someone is asking how to treat a sunburn, and some even ask how they can "get rid of it"...like they can magically make it disappear. Seems like so many people just don't get it yet. Don't understand since it's not a big secret what all the damage does, and since good sunscreens are readily available. I've had 5 skin cancers removed (sunscreens didn't come out till I was in my 20's, and by then the damage was done), and now have serious scarring. Do some of you still think it won't happen to you? I'm trying not to sound preachy.....I just want you all to take care of youselves and not have to go thru' this in the future.

I think it is stupid as well. All those people tanning and fakebaking, very very bad. I however used to be one of them. I have very very light skin and the only way I could tan was if I used a tanning bed. So I did that for a few years and when I was younger I had several severe sunburns(my mother was oblivous to the fact, lol). I'm only 23 and haven't seen anything to be worried about, but I am scared that I will someday. I try and make sure i don't go out when it is the peak hours and if I do I always wear sunscreen. Far to dangerous and it is something that can be prevented. I'm sorry to hear about the skin cancer, I hope everything is good now.

I hear you. i can not even Begin to tell you how many times i have seen kids at the pool with no sunscreen on. I see their little burnt bodies and i think of the damage its doing. I wear sunblock every single day and try to take good care of my skin. Not only do sunburns hurt, but they really do damage to the body. After all the skin is the largest organ in your body. purpose of skin is:
to form a protective layer over the body to help prevent injury and disease
to keep moisture in the body (water retention)
to make vitamin D
to regulate body temperature
to excrete waste. so the best bet is to take real good of your skin

It is laziness, don't get me wrong I have had my sunburns in the past, and did I learn from them....YES! It only takes 2 minutes to put on sunblock, yes days to get rid of a sunburn. I have 2 children and neither one of them have ever had a burn, every burn you have increases your risk of skin cancer....and wearing clothes outside does not help that much, most shirts only have a spf of about a 5. Good post!

Its a credit to your character that ou are concerned about others. It is wise to learn from others and foolish to ignore others' wise warnings from personal experience.
I tell people all the time and remind them I worry about the fair skinned kids people are out without any coverage-no hats etc when they are the protectors and the accumlated damgeis what counts for those kids and they have no choice .....we need more public information people are very uniformed and unconcerned about health in general Thanks for bringing it to our attention
And Pooh, get thee to a doctor and tell that story Im sure you will be given a talkin to Yes you CAN help it Clothing timing and proper sunscreen application are all a part of the program.

It would seem people, especially teens, simply don't believe they too can get skin cancer and either be scarred for life, or in the case of melanoma, die. I am in a similar situation to you, sun screen wasn't available when I was a child and now I too battle with skin cancers, it's a shame that no one listens that could benefit from our mistakes.

I am very pale with red hair and even with sun bolck I will burn within a matter of minutes. I never tan I just turn pink then white so there are some of us that can't help but to get burnt.
