It may not be "common" exactly,
however every person finds some form of "comfort"
Lots of people out there are busy sucking on cigarettes, I don't know what the difference is, a thumb isn't going to taste as nasty.
Other forms of comfort may involve other senses
The "feel" of ........ fur or satin or cloth or the water of a hot tub.
The "taste" of ........ chocolate, or bar-b-qued ribs, ice cream
The "smell" of .......... coffee or bacon or a flower or perfume
The "sound" of ......... music or a beat or the sea shore
The "sight" of .......... a sunset, flower, or a certain person

I may just be more normal than you were thinking.

no its not...but its not that unusual and sounds like it could possibly interfere with other parts of your life. its a habit and a comforting habit...and just like any other habit...takes time to break....if you choose to.
