Talk to your recruiter about OCS (Officers Candidate School) and about an appointment to a military academy.
OCS can be tougher than boot camp. In addition to the physical requirements, you will do lots of skull sweat.
A service academy, whether it be West Point, Annapolis, or Colorado Springs, is a combination of a top flight university, boot camp, and OCS rolled into one. With an academy appointment, you not only earn a commission, you get a paid college education. You will be advised on what to study for the best benefit of the service. Another advantage of service academies is that a majority of the flag officers, i.e. generals and admirals, come from service academies. There are few ROTC officers with stars on their shoulders.
As for being a strategist, you don't get to plan strategy until you have stars on your shoulder boards, and that takes 20 years or more. Every commander is to some degree a tactician.
And get over the idea that officers are better than enlisted men. Until you are in the upper half of the Captain's list, there will be sergeants with a higher pay scale than you. And there will always be senior NCO's that know more about your job than you do. If you act superior and snotty, they can ruin your career. Treat them as men worthy of respect and they can and will make you look good, perhaps even make you look better than you actually are.
There was a maxim in the Royal Navy that a young commander could sail his ship around the world, fight and win a naval campaign and be promoted to Admiral all without leaving his cabin. All he had to do was to do as his senior non-commissioned officer told him to do.
Strategy is more than just military science. You have to understand psychology, and I don't meant that mickey mouse abnormal psychology crap. You must understand how your enemy thinks and how he reacts. You have to understand how to inspire the troops under your command to perform dangerous tasks in which they face great likelihood of death. You have to understand weapons systems, both yours and the enemies. You must know how to use your strengths, and know how to minimize your weaknesses. And you must know your enemy's strengths and how to counter them as well as knowing his weaknesses and how to exploit them.
Some people say that great strategists are born, not made, and I can't say that I disagree.
A degree in engineering, whether civil, electrical, or chemical will be useful. A degree in management will also help make you a good officer. The armed forces need professionals in all fields, but engineering and management are good starting points for a career.
If you work hard to be a good officer, learn to look out for your troops, and earn their respect, the rest will fall into place.

first of all there is no such thing as a strategist. Just go to any military recruiting website such as goarmy.com and look at all the mos "job" descriptions to find a more accurate description of what you're looking to do. The guys that make all the important command decision or "strategist" are the guys with alot of rank that have been in for awihle. Makes sense right, don't let the new guys make the important decisions. Anways,
I would highly reccomend commisioning rather than enlisting, rather rotc or a service acadamy, like west point" would be the way to go, although the acadamies are very selective. Anyone off the street with a four year degree can go to officer candidate school, ocs a 14 week course, but guys that do this generally don't get the choise of their mos, you'll get stuck where ever they need people, I wouldn't reccomend that if you care what you want for job. You can go to rotc at a variety of schools and its definatly not as hard as the service acads. plus you'll still have freedom to party and what not on the weekends. Whatever you chose to do, you got a long road ahead of you, good luck bro.

Let me try and help: First unless you go through ROTC and are at the top of your class you will not get a choice of what you do unless your specialized like a doctor or a lawyer or an engineer. If you come in off the street as an officer you need a degree already or be within a semester of finishing. There will be certain tests you have to take and pass as well as being physically, mentally, and morally qualified. As far as being a stratagist, military intelligence is a good field for that but going in as a 2nd Lieutenant it will be a long time before you do any of that.

1. Get an education - a degree. Might as well be through a military school if that's where you want to be but you might keep more doors open by taking a civil degree program in science, engineering or whatever.
2. No. I think you're talkling about military intelligence.
3. Work your way up through the ranks.

The first thing you need to decide is what career you want to do then see which military branch has the best to offer you in the career you want. If you just want to be a ground pounder the marines are best. If you want a technical career the Air Force is probably best. Decide what you want for yourself first.

The best way to achieve your goal is to apply for one of the military academies and major in math and game theory. Those are the most use for strategist.

If you have a 4 year degree and a good GPA you can be a commissioned officer... don't count on getting any respect from the enlisted guys with an attitude like that. You make it sound as if you're "too good" to be a recruit.
Trust me, no one is.
