I have a purebred border collie. He is a year old and his testicles have still not dropped. We bought him with the intentions to breed him with our female when he was old enough, but he still has no testicles that are visable. Some one told me they had a dog and he didnt drop until he was 15 months old. Jack just turned a year in march. Should i be worried about a disease, or medical condition! Any imput would be great. We use to breed dobermans but decided to switch after our ***** got hit by a car. Never had this problem before. Thank you all who reply

It would be best to have a vet examine him. Since you want to breed him, it might be possible for the testicles to be brought down. If they remain in his abdomen, most likely he will be sterile, and sometimes retained testicles become cancerous.

Talk to your dog's breeder. Some lines drop late, but in most cases, if the testicles are going to drop, they will do so by the time the dog is 3 months old. Every male dog I have ever owned had both testicles descended by 8 weeks. You should be able to feel them.

Have they dropped and then gone back up? If so, they may come down again. However, if the inguinal ring is already closed, you're out of luck. Your vet should be able to tell you for sure. If the testicles are not down by now, I doubt they ever will, and your dog should be neutered-- retained testicles easily become cancerous. It's important that your dog's breeder also be made aware. Undescended testicles are a serious problem in some lines, and are for the most part, genetic. A dog whose offspring have problems with this should be removed from a breeding program.

Dog show/breeding people will usually neuter a dog and sell it as a pet if the testicles aren't descended permanently by a year of age. There have been cases of some dropping later, but that's rare. Late testicles/undescended usually aren't worth messing with in a breeding program.

Dropping testicles after 6 months is usually regarded as a miracle. In fact by a year they probably have started to atrophy and there is no chance of fertility. Neutering the male is needful because of a high cancer rate in the retained testes.
If your female is of breeding merit, stud service is usually not hard to find and if she isn't of merit she shouldn't be bred.

Your dogs testicles should have dropped by now, better have him vet checked, if you let it go the testicles can become cancerous.

They should have dropped by 8 weeks. Neuter him now. This is an inherited trait.
