I have a house trained female golden retriever/pit mix. She's had pee accidents in the house before but it was few and far between. However, lately - I've had to fill her waterbowl 2 - 3 times per day (I used to only have to fill it once)... She has been peeing in the house recently and after I've taken her out just an hour before - and it's very unlike her. What are some possible reasons for this change?

she is not on any medications - only recent change is that my fiance's 14 year old daughter moved in with us about 3 weeks ago.

Two things that come to mind, either a simple UTI, or diabetes. Hopefully it is just a urinary tract infection which is easy to clear up. It is best to get to the vet to have a urinalysis and some blood work done. Good Luck!

Depending on where you live, it may have to do with the increased heat outside. My dogs tend to drink a lot more in the summer and they usually want another drink after being outside. So they drink, go outside to potty, drink some more and then need to go out in 20 minutes. LOL It's something of a cycle.

I have found that if I keep a bowl of water in the shade outside, they can drink while they are outside and don't feel the urge to drink again when they come in. I've also had to increase the time they are outside and keep the inside water bowl up unless they specifically ask for it. (My rott can lift the toilet lid, so I always know when he's thirsty) I know that people say that you should always have fresh water out for your dogs, but dogs aren't always thirsty. I know mine will let me know if they are thirsty, the same way they let me know when they want more food. Use common sense. Give your dog as much water as she wants every couple of hours and then put it up. That way you can control how much she's getting and know approximately when she'll need to go outside.

You may want to take her to your vet to rule out any medical reasons for her increased intake of water. Any time your dog's behavior changes noticably, you want to make sure it's not due to a health issue.

Best of luck.

What are you feeding her? The FDA says that not ALL of the tainted pet foods were removed from the shelves. Kidney failure is what is taking place in the thousands of dogs who were effected by poison food. I would be very concerned. She needs to see the vet and you need to triple check her food supply.
Is she spayed? Intact females are a risk for pyometra. A couple of the main symptoms are excessive water intake and frequent urinating. Could be all kinds of things. Your vet is the best place to get it figured out.

My shelti mix did the same thing. I took her in to the vet & after some bloodwork, they found she was diabetic. She now takes insulin twice a day & eats Science Diet W/D for diabetic dogs. Has she started eating more or gaining weight suddenly? When they're diabetic, their body thinks it's starving all the time so they eat more. Please get her seen as soon as possible as this could kill her just like with people.
Good Luck.

I'm assuming there are no new medications or anything? some causes of pu/pd could be diabetes, uti, kidney problems or cushings dz. heat could also be a factor but i don't think that it would make this much of a difference. id say get her to a vet pretty soon.

Bladder infection?/Diabetes?/Early kidney failure?
GET TO VET. THEY WILL START BY CHECKING A URINE SAMPLE. THEN GO FROM THERE. POSSIBLY TAKE SOME BLOOD WORK TO RULE OUT OTHER PROBLEMS

Some animals, in particular Dogs and Cats have similar diseases as Human Beings.

The illness you described for your dog, sounds like a urinary tract infection or Diabetes.
Please take her to a Vet immediately.
