Human beings, both male and female, have 24 ribs (12 sets). This was noted by the Flemish anatomist Vesalius in 1543 setting off a wave of controversy, since it was assumed based on the story of Adam and Eve, that men's ribs would number one fewer than women's. On rare occasions people have one rib more or less.
Yes, Adam's apple can be surgically altered by making it either more prominent than desired, or reducing the size of the laryngeal prominence through plastic surgery. This surgery is not without risk as it can adversely affect the voice and cause permanent damage as well as leaving a visible scar.

The notion that men and women have different amount of ribs is a myth. It stems from the Creation story in one of Adam's ribs was removed to create Eve. However, whether or not the story is true all human beings have the same amount of ribs.
I just read that it is possible to alter the Adam's apple when the vocal cords are altered in an attempt to make a man's voice higher pitched in order to sound like a woman, here is the web address http://www.voicedoctor.net:16080/surgery/fem_lar.html
It's called Feminization laryngoplasty

Men and women have the same amount of ribs. Anyone who has ever seen an X-ray or any second year medical student who has disected a cadaver could tell you this. I don't know about the adam's apple but why would you want that altered? It's just protective cartalage around your thyroid. Of course, if you want to DIE of MASSIVE INFECTION or have SERIOUS weight gain, you can alter it but good luck finding a surgeon who will do that for you. While not all Doctors take the hippocratic oath seriously, they are all afraid to be sued. Anyone who perfroms this surgery is just asking to be sued, arrested etc.

I am a medical student and I have dissected several male and female bodies. The answer is yes men and women have the same amount of ribs. Very rarely a man or women will have slightly shorter or absent 11th and 12th ribs. Also, very rarely in man or women the last neck vertebrae will appear long like an extra rib. Some women just have smaller frames. Prove this to yourself by going to the Body Worlds Exhibit if you are ever near one . . . it is very interesting.

men and women have the same number of ribs.
for men who have a sex change operation, that adam's apple is a dead giveaway, and yes there is a surgical procedure called thyroplasty which can alter the adam's apple to make it less prominent.

1. Usually
2. Yes.
You can get a laryngoplasty to make your voice box look and sound like a woman. You can get this done less expensively in Thailand. They might take out a rib too if you ask.
hope this helps.
ETA: try snopes. The rib thing is so baseless that it won't be mentioned in medical sites.

Yes, ten pairs of ribs, either sex. Not only can the Adam's apple be surgically altered, it can be, and is, removed for treatment of cancer not uncommonly. You need more to do at work.
