My German Shepard is 1 year and 2 months. Today I took her on a walk. She did well, walked beside me. The problem is when a dog who was in a fenced in yard started barking, I couldn't get her attention. I told her to sit but she ignored me and just stood in a stand/ready position facing this dog. I finally had to scruff her around the sides of her face look at her and she finally sat. The rest of the way home she was fine and walked with her tail in the submissive mood. When we got home she roamed to house with her tail up but when approached me she put it in the submissive mood. It's been a couple of months since I have scruffed her and put her on her back. Do you think I need to do this again? If so how often should I be doing it?

Oh, yea. My husband and I just got back from vacation and the dog will run up to him and lay on her back and submissive pee. She never did this before, why is she doing it now?

I don't think so. We have been doing it for almost a year and she never has done it. We don't do it very often either, like I said I haven't done it for at least a couple of months. I'm thinking it has something to do with the person she stayed with.

besides dogs do it to other dogs in the pack. There ways to stop the submissive peeing, we just haven't had to deal with it. We had a puppy only about 6 wks and he did it all the time and we weren't even training.

scruff her?
this is an out-dated and ineffective type of training.
alpha rolls or scruff shakes or any other physical reprimands have long been replaced. You will end up with a dog that submissive-pees when it sees you if you do not learn a better approach.
if you tell users where you are located maybe someone can recommend a trainer for you to see who uses modern and effective methods.
someone has mis-taught.mis-informed you about dog training.
(did you see my answer--you taught her to submissive pee when you used violent corrections and negative training).

Why did you ask this question if you were going to argue with everyone who has more experience than you?
You obviously know everything about dog training. That is why you now have a young dog who cowers and pees when he sees you and fears you rather than loves you.
You sound like someone who should not have a dog if you do not know any better than to physically browbeat a sweet-natured, gentle puppy.
Also submissive peeing -once learned through bad treatment--- may possibly be cured by going to dog training classes.

Well! Now that King Les has informed us all what we are doing fallacious, grammar integrated.......... LOL Sarah - I recognize this sounds seen, however have you ever attempted correcting the conduct? The puppy does not recognize you do not wish her to do it if you do not inform her. When she is going to chew/nibble, YELL NO!!! Do now not talk it. Do now not whine it. Do now not draw back or flail. Do now not deliver her the "mother seem". You must yell **NO** sternly and startlingly adequate to quit the conduct instantly. You wish each and every room within the residence and probably your buddies to listen to your NO. In addition to this, you'll take a look at a sour apple spray (bought in puppy retail outlets) to your palms/hands so that you're going to now not style well. The blend will have to deter her... The best factor that issues me approximately your query is in which you recounted you had a Rott that grew to become on you. If you consider it is a truly likelihood along with your GSD, you have to take her by way of an obedience magnificence to get rid of any confusion she possibly experiencing concerning who the chief is. Good success!

You caused the submissive urination problem.
You have a sensitive puppy.
If there is any hope of solving this problem it lies in taking the dog to obedience training in order to restore the dog's self confidence.
Keep in mind that you caused this problem and do not do any more negative training. Once dogs start to submissive urinate they often do it forever.

By the time this dog is three it may unfortunately bite a person, probably you or your husband. You are not teaching your dog how to be submissive to you. What you have now is a scared "puppy" what you will have if you continue your training methods is a ticked off mature dog. I urge you to find a trainer and learn a proper way to have your dog obedient to you.

I don't think she needs more assertion from you of your dominance. Rather, work on positive reinforcement of behaviors you want to encourage. Use treats and praise to reward attention to you. You will need to anticipate distractions and condition her response to what you want before she is so intently distracted. See that she is happy to be a member of the pack, which is what she wants.
The only time I have needed that scruffing/pinned by throat and belly grab (serious alpha behavior) with my 18-month old shepherd mix, once did the trick. (And, yes, I needed it at that time.)

On your next walk take treats with you. As you are walking in an area with no distractions come up with a command word and train her to look at you when she hears that word. A good word would be "look" or "focus". As you are walking every time you say the word and she looks at you give her a treat. Then practice every time you walk, when you say the word, she looks, you praise. In the future when you run into a situation when you need her focused on you, say the word, it should be a positive reaction to you because: focus word + you=treat &praise. Just an idea.

Ok, this is an easy one. pretty much you just grabbed her by her loose skin around her neck right? And kind of yanked her? if so, thats not enough to prove your the top dog..what you can is really easy, but you must have guts to do this to a german shepard or any large breed. At any given time you can do it. Say you give her a toy, let her play w it for a few so she gets into it, then get on all fours and crawl up to her, see what she does. If she growls then LUNGE at her, growling, or making any animal noises that you can, when you lunge at her, grab her throat, NOT hard but let her know your there. When your making this noises, bury your face in her fur around her neck, move her back and forth kinda hard and act like your a dog attacking her throat. If she is like my dogs, she will pee right away and not want to be around you...After that, just get up and walk away and go about your busines like normal, play w her, walk her whatever. Do it w her food too, BUT NEVER COME UP TO HER GROWLING!! THAT WILL START A BIIIGGG PROBLEM!! But how often, when ever! If she is laying next to you, just stare her in the eyes until SHE moves, if she looks away or leaves, that is her showing that your higher than her, if she doesnt, that mean she is challenging you then do the lunghing, growling, moving around thing. Or even just get real close her and start growling..she what she does, if she doesnt look away, drop her ears, or get *smaller* (trying to get smaller by laying FLAT on the floor etc) than do the lunging until it she does look away or walks away

I think she is being submissive enough. When she was walking with you, and she ignored you, she was just protecting you.. that's what they do. She evidently felt the need to protect you more than to listen to you. You need to get her around more dogs so she won't be so freaked and feeling she has to protect you from them.

Submissive dogs always try to make themselves appear smaller. It's a way of saying, "I'm no challenge, so please don't hurt me." They'll crouch or cower, with their backs arched and their heads pulled in and lowered. Their ears will be pulled down and back, and their foreheads smooth. They won't make eye contact and may in fact avert their eyes. They'll pull back the corners of their mouths and may look to be smiling, although this isn't a smile as we know it. They may also lick their noses. Their tails will be down and perhaps pulled up tightly between their back legs. And the tips of their tails may be wagging or twitching. They may make pawing movements with their front feet.
When they're with a more dominant dog, they'll sometimes lick his muzzle, or lift a front paw to him to show that they acknowledge who's in charge. Other times they'll show their acceptance of the status quo by licking their own noses and putting their ears back -- either slightly or flat to their skulls. If their ears are flat to their skulls, they're accepting a reprimand; if their ears waver back and forth, or one is higher than the other, they're also accepting it, but with a fair degree of reluctance. If they're totally obedient, they'll also tuck their tails between their legs.
In extreme submission, dogs lie down, roll over, and bare their bellies. They'll pull their legs in against their bodies, and their front paws will be tucked in close, too. Their tails will be pulled in between their back legs and tucked against their bellies, and the tips of their tails may be twitching. Some dogs will dribble a little urine.
Not all submissive behavior indicates a fearful mood, though. A dog may bare his belly to his owner yet maintain direct, soft eye contact, which shows that he's not afraid. His posture is one of deference and trust. He could also, of course, be angling for a tummy rub.
