ok, heres the story. I use my computer's alarm to wake up everyday and I have vista and xp both installed on my computer. When I turn the computer on, there are two choices, Vista or XP. It has a 30 sec countdown and then it selects Vista. Heres my problem, I set the alarm and sleep. When I wake up I see that computer has restarted automatically and is now in Vista. What can I do to stop my computer from restarting?

I don't know anything about Vista, but in Windows XP go to start, choose "Control Panel" go to "Sceduled Tasks" and go through the settings and you'll probably find the problem there by going through all the "file folders." There is a radio button that says something like "Start computer automatically" with a yes or no option. If yes is picked then a time will be entered. Another problem could be in "Adminstrative Tools" Your computer could be set to check for virus updates or scheduled to scan for viruses on a regular basis. For example, my computer turns itself on and does a virus scan and other security functions at 3am every morning. So take a look at those settings too.

First of all, as an intermediate computer user, this procedure should be used only as a last resort to stop automatic restart. The computer restarts because it has encountered an error that it cannot recover from in the usual manner. So, unless you know the underlying cause of the restarts this procedure should not be used. That being said, below is the procedure to stop the automatic reboots in Windows XP. As of yet I have no experience with Windows Vista.

Right click My Computer, click the Advanced tab, click settings in the Startup and Recovery section., on the next screen there is a series of checkboxes. One is labeled automatically restart. Uncheck this box.

Hope this helps.
