No, it needs antibiotics. If left untreated can turn quickly into pneumonia.

I have gotten over bronchitis without going to a doctor. It takes a long time for your immune system to kick in when you are that run down. However It can be done. Just get plenty of rest and try to eat well. If you can possibly go to a doctor though I would advice that; it is so easy to get a secondary sinus infection or the bronchitis can go into something worse and it takes so long to get over.

You know what? I have bronchitis right now. I'm on the tail end of it, and I researched this on webmd for you, so let me tell you what I found. There are 2 kinds of bronchitis: bacterial and viral. I have bacterial. You cough your butt off either way, and have tons of mucus either way, but the most common type is viral, and antibiotics don't do anything to a virus. According to webmd "research on antibiotics and acute bronchitis in otherwise healthy people reports that antibiotics modestly reduce cough after 1 to 2 weeks, but have no effect on night cough, a cough with mucus, or quality of life. In people who also have symptoms of a common cold and have been ill less than a week, antibiotics generally are not effective."
So, your Dr. can give you antibiotics that might help, and cough syrup that can help with your cough(though it didn't help me much). But you can also drink plenty of water, sleep a ton, try a humidifier(that helped me-it helps loosen phlegm), and see if it gets better on its own. The choice is yours.

Hope you feel better soon!

Bronchitis by definition is a cough for 3 months or more. If you do not go to Dr. and get steroids and or bronchodilators it will linger for a long time. GO TO THE DR>
