No, those won't be counted as 4 years. They will be counted as how many days he actually served in uniform during those 4 years. In other words (assuming no deployments), it would be approximately about 8 months worth of time for retirement IF he re entered active service.

On the other hand if he stays 16 more years in the Reserves he could retire, though he wouldn't see his decreased check until he was 60, rather than the month after IF he retired from the Active Army.

Clear as mud? You should try reading it out of the regulations.

Yes, once he joins the active duty they will compute the reserve time into active time although it is not much, ensure he keeps copies of all his paperwork as this often gets messed up upon transitioning from reserve to active. Good Luck

no. He needs 20,active or reserve.or any combination of both.
How it does work is, the more of this time on ACTIVE infliences how much retirement pay he gets. but you need 20.either way, reserve, active or combo of both.

not really.. as was stated before.. they only count the actual days he was in unifrom for retirement purposes.. so we are talking a few months, maybe a year if he was deployed for a while.

BUT it counts for longevity/time in service. so when he transfers over to AD, he will be paid as if he already had 4 years in.

if he waits too long he may exceed the age limit for active duty.
