DNA has a double helix structure because it is a two stranded helical structure. It is composed of polynucleotide.
Polynucleotides are made up of nucleotides.
Nucleotides are nucleosides + phosphate groups
nucleosides are pentose sugar + heterocyclic nitrogen base.

In DNA the pentose sugar is Deoxyribose sugar thats why the name Deoxyribonucleic acid.
The heterocylic nitrogen bases are purines - double ringed nitrogen bases and pyrimidines - single ringed nitrogen bases.

Purines are adenine and guanine, pyrimidines are cytosine and thymine.

The nucleotide is formed by a nitrogen base ( A,T,G,C) attached to the Deoxyribose sugar through N - glycosidic linkage, The phosphate group is liked to the sugar through phospho mono ester bond.

The nucleotide is liked to the next nucleotide by phosphodiester bond and to the adjacent, lateral nucleotide ( forming the other strand of DNA) through Hydrogen bonds between the nitrogen bases. This forms the chain of double stranded polynucleotides or DNA which is twisted like a helical ladder .

Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a double stranded molecule in a helical form, "a double helix". DNA is the basis of heredity, composed of necleotides with base pairs A-T, G-C and hydrogen bonds form the cross linkage.

DNA is the name of the chemical that stores genetic information. DNA makes up the chromosomes that are in the nucleus of every cell in your body. DNA is in the shape of a double helix.

The image below shows what a section of a DNA molecule looks like.
