What do you think of the fact that this has been done and discovered 1500 years ago, and that science has now proven it?

"Giving rest to the digestive system. Ramadan is the period of rest for the digestive system, which is responsible for the metabolism process of food. Consequently, the liver also takes rest as it is the main factory of food metabolism. To achieve this benefit, Moslems should adhere to the tradition (sunnah) of the Prophet by abstaining from having too much food after breakfast. The Prophet (PBUH) said; "The son-of-Adam never fills a bowl worse than his belly. Some bites are enough for man to prop his physique. Had he wished otherwise, then one third for his food, and one third for his drink, and one third for his breath." It is of benefit to the body that the break of fasting starts with some dates (as indicated in the Prophetic tradition).

Dates are rich in Glucose and Fructose, which have a great caloric benefit specially for the brain, and are useful in raising the level of sugar gradually in blood, thus reducing the feeling of hunger and the need for large quantities of food."

I agree completely, except for the dates. I am diabetic and I am not supposed to eat them because of the sugar content. They raise blood sugar significantly and quickly in someone with insulin resistance or no insulin production. And you are right, fasting is very good for the body, if you are healthy with no significant health issues. Sadly, that rules me out.

Addition: The glycemic index of dates (which tells you how quickly an item affects blood glucose levels) is 103. Generally, anything above 55 is moderately high and anything over 70 is very high.

You are a little confused.

We knew the benefit of fasting and perhaps dates, but we didn't know WHY.

Science has explained why.

Similarly native south American Indians knew that certain plants would alleviate headaches, and other physical ailments.

Does this mean we should all start worshiping Quetzalcoatl?

The common knowledge of plants and home remedies was simply added to the quran while it was being written. In essence you are simply reading a basic guide on how to deal with hunger pangs while fasting, even though the writers and people didn't know WHY it worked, they just noticed it did work.

Allah is our Lord and Creator. He would be the only One who would know how we will properly work. Nevermind the non-muslims who are against fasting, there is a DUTCH doctor who prescribes fasting for some of his patients and he has always gotten a POSTIVE result.

Mind u, he is a DUTHC docotor. A NON-MUSLIM!!!

What's sad is that most people don't observe Ramadan correctly (at least where I live). It's not a rest for the digestive system in Morocco, it's a month of gluttony. People actually GAIN weight here.

I am sure that ancient people made many remarkable observations that science later confirmed.

BTW, eight hours of sleep is enough of a fast for the body's digestive system. Luckily, we get one of those every night.
