Once a dog knows it's name it should be used infrequently!
That may surprise some people to hear that!
The name then becomes a 'cue' or 'attention' command and when the dog hears it it is similar to.........
"Fido" dog stops what it's doing and looks. "Yes Mum. What do you want?"
So it should always be "Fido. Sit" or some other command. Never use the name on it's own..... always follow it with a command if you want a reaction.
If you use the name too often it just becomes a part of the background noise that a dog hears all the time!

My dog tilts his head to understand the spoken sound of his name but I know that by listening to the same speech at certain times of the day he knows what to do. For example he knows what time it is according to animal instinct. Everyday at exactly 5 PM he comes over, looks at me and barks 1 time. How does he know is 5 or is dinner time is according to what I am doing at that time. He has learn exactly what I do in a 24 hour period and since I don't change my routine,he is able to memorise my actions precisely to the point. Is for that reason that when I leave or I am not at home for a certain amount of time he forgets his routine until I recondition him to remember. PS. He has a brain is just not has big as mine:)

Well I'm sure that animals do know there name and commands and hand motions. They are like we are, we know our names, etc.. we have amore educated way of expressing it.... Dogs can't express in those kinds of ways. They also do get use to tones and voices, like if you're loud and yell and are angry, the dog will understand they did something wrong. If you're happy and cute little voices, they think they've doe good...So yes i do believe they know their given name.

I think I heard once that they only hear the last 3 or 4 letters, but Im not sure, all I know is that my vet told me not to give my dog a name ending with no or yes, or anything that sounds like any of the commands you usually teach your dog, but like I said, Im not sure.

Yoiou can train your dog to know his name. And there is a specific method.

1. Get some small treats and go in a room or area with no distractions. Just stand there with your dog, free to walk around.

2. When he isn't looking at you, say his name. When he looks at you, give him a tiny treat.

3. Then ignore him again, until he looks away. Say his name, and when he looks at you, give him a treat.

4. Repeat this for about 10 minutes. Then stop the training session. Repeat again the next day, and so on.

5. When your dog learns to look ... at your hand or at the reward ... when you say his name, then modify the "game" a little. Say his name and move the treat between your eyes, then give it to him.

6. Repeat for ~ 9 minutes. Now when he looks at your eyes, after you say his name, slowly move your hand to give him the treat. When he looks at your hand, stop, then move it back between your eyes. For this one or two last minutes, only give him the treat when he keeps looking in your eyes, after you say his name, and while you move your hand to give him the reward.

7. Next day, start out easy for one or two minutes, then go back to the the last way you did it yesterday.

8. Now always give him the reward, only while he looks in your eyes.

I taught my 10 week old puppy to always look in my eyes, when I called his name... and it only took me 10 days. Nowadays, he will look at me... and then he may turn around and ignore me... but that is a different question. :-)

Well, my sister had a dog named Mindy. She answered to Mindy, and all of her nicknames..Minnie, Mindala, Sissy, "she" and "her". If you were just talking and said something like, 'she should do something" Mindy would look at you, 'cos she new "she" referred to her. If you said, "he" , she wouldn't even look up. So, anything a dog is used to being called becomes her name. No matter how many names she/he has, and they know it.

Well they get used to having a name. Because small puppies wont come to you if you just call it Bob or Frank. If you call them and use that name around them, they start to associate that they are Bella, and not the water hose they chewed a hole in. And dogs will come to a name that sounds familiar to theirs. For example, if you have a dog named Billy, he might come when you call him Willy, or Silly.

dogs recognize the connection between their 'names' and other words, but don't understand the significance.

My dogs have 'given' names but they have nick names as well. If they are used often enough the dogs know your intent.

Well of course they get used to hearing their name called just like a child does.
