Anyone who is giving accurate information appropriately. Often nurses will give the family updates some large surgery centers have a designated person who only keeps family's informed. (they would be considered on the team even if they are not in the patient room while the operation is going on.

I've had a couple of surgeries myself and been present (in the waiting room)at afew for family members and it's always been the doctor who's performing the surgery that has come out and informed the family as to what was happening. This is in Canada though, don't know if it's the same worldwide.
