I've always wondered where do they throw away the extra skin, tumor, stillborn, or things of that nature? do they have a junk yard for that? do they burn it? for example when someone has a tummy tuck, where do they throw away that piece of extra skin?!

(just a random thought while sitting in nursing school)

Some pathology slides are kept, but most tissue is incinerated.

Stillborn babies are frequently dressed, photographs taken, and then buried. The hospital in which I work treats this with great sensitvity. They have tiny clothes donated to dress the babies, and they take photos that make it look like the baby is sleeping. It's sad, but beautiful in a way.

At my plastic surgeon's office, we "red bag" the extra tummy skin. It is disposed as medical waste, which is incinerated.

Other tissue goes to pathology (tumors, breast reduction tissue -they weigh it to see if it's enough for insurance to cover the procedure- anything abnormal). Pathology labs have protocols for disposing of human tissue.

I think state laws govern what is done with medical waste, but where I live, it is all incinerated.

ALL unneeded human parts-- umbilical cords, ejected placenta, unused blood, amputated limbs, cancerous livers, even feces and urine-- is BURNED. It is NEVER sent to a landfill. [Only the stupidest of clinics -- abortion clinics and unlicensed liposuction clinics -- throw their waste in the trash. Once discovered, they face HUGE fines and jail time for the owner and/or operators.] Most large hospital have a built in incinerator, very much like a crematorium . The flesh MUST be completely consumed by fire, so the temperature is between 2000 and 3000 degrees. Smaller hospitals pay for the services of a special "waste disposal" company in their area. In this case, the unneeded flesh is kept frozen until it is picked up by the waste management team.

It usually goes to the pathologist for examination. After that, it gets put in a biological waste container and sent to the incinerator.

Bio-medical waste may be solid or liquid. Examples of infectious waste include discarded blood, identifiable body parts of human or animal tissue, it should be disposed properly whether they are contaminated or not. As many medical wastes are classified as infectious and could potentially lead to the spread of infectious disease.

Not sure for most things, but as far as stillborns go, I think you actually have an option of burying the baby - like, with a funeral.
