Fasting is known to be good for our bodies. Unfortunately fasting could be very dangerous for me because I use insulin and stopping it for Ramadan really is not an option. I need to speak to an Imam about my options since I am not considered healthy enough to fast. :-(
Addition: About Ramadan in Morocco... what Nomadic has stated does happen, but it generally is NOT common practice. Of course, these things can vary by region... but in most areas this behavior is not typical. There are plenty of Muslims who abide by the rules of Ramadan and do not make gluttons of themselves.

Ofcourse Fasting is not ridiculous!! It enriches ANYONE both spiritually and physically. U just listed the medical benefits. I will list the spiritual benefits. When we stay hungry and thirsty from dawn to sunset, we can feel how it must be like for all those less fortunate than us. N then we feel sympathy for them and we want to help them. Which promotes humanatrian acts, peaceful relations and a healthy society... Fasting even makes a person learn self-restraint which makes up his character as a whole. So there goes a plus point for physcological point of view.
N Islam is a relgion of the desert!! Oh pls give me a break.

Thanks for the interesting article.
Your question made me remember being an assistant teacher in Canada for a year, gr.4/5. The teacher I was helping was really great, won provicial prizes, created pedagogical approaches which were used by others, had the best class I´ve ever seen. But he was annoyed that the Muslim kids in his class would fast in Ramadan. He wasn´t racist - he just meant well, because he saw that they were tired and sometimes had headaches. At the time, I wasn´t even Muslim, I didn´t know much about it, and didn´t have much to say. Now, I would be able to give him some good information which would make sense to his perspective, and show that starting this early would keep up good health longer into life. Thanks for the link! I´m sure I´ll use it again sometime.

Ramadan kareem to you too :D Anyways, your sister is correct. Once you get your period that means you are old enought to start fasting. If you feel like you are going to faint or something wrong is going to happen then dont fast, you are still pretty young and you will not be punished for not fasting. Although it is very good practise to start fasting from your age.

Well I'm not surprised. Islam has always put emphasis on a persons health both mental and physical. This is why we are not allowed to drink/smoke, eat pork ( undercooked can be fatal).. adultery ( emotion distress, unwanted pregnancy) etc...
Fasting not only helps to build your health and stamina but also encourages self-control

I never said fasting was ridiculous. fast if you wish, I know it's healthy.
Christian fasts are different though. you fast when you need it, like to maintain self control. if I am correct Ramadan fasts are from sun up to son down, correct? we go 40 days on nothing but water. similar

Even if you go to a store like Whole Foods they have a bunch of books on different kids of fasting--it is a healthy thing to do.

But it s not a true fast. You don t eat or drink anything until the evening, then you gorge. So what does that accomplish? It makes no sense.

TNX for the post...
I look at fasting as if I'm giving my digestive system a break... for a month every year...
The poor thing is working all year long... why not give it a break?
