I am faced with the inability to afford car insurance. Should I continue driving then? Would i have to pay for damage if the accident is my own fault?

It depends on where you live, but I would strongly advise against it.
In my state, driving without a valid tag (no registration) is $2,500 or up to 6 months in jail. Driving without insurance is no less than a $300 fine (up to $1000) and up to 6 months for the first offense, and $800-2500 and up to a year in jail.
And that's if they just stop you. If you're in an accident without liability insurance, then yes, you are liable for all damages.

Its really as simple as this, you go to jail in some states for getting caught without registration, and insurance. They'll impound your car for up to $15 a day, and you have to leave your car there for minimum of 218 days. and face fines on top of that, in our state its $1500. and yes, even if you have liability, you still have to pay for your accident, unless the other persons insurance will cover you (which they usually wont cover an uninsured driver)

It can cost you plenty if you wreck the car by yourself, or if you have an accident with someone else. You can be sued, your driver license revoked, not counting the moral responsibility. Whether you cause the wreck or not, you will lose in a huge way. If you cannot afford insurance, take the public transportation available to you.

If you drive without ins. you are taking a very, very serious risk. Don't drive until you can afford ins.
If this will only be a few days, no problem, but if it will be awhle, you may want to put your car into storage. Yes,you need your car, but I am sorry but there is no way around it.

driving with an unregistered car is like driving a stolen car...

driving without insurance is very bad where I live, you could get your lisence suspended, your car towed and your *ss thrown in jail.

If you were caught driving a unregistered vehicle with no insurance, I'm sure the cop would charge you with everything he possibly could.

If you were in a accident with me, and it was your fault, I'd sue you for everything I could get - and I am not lawsuit happy...

if you fail to register your car, you'll be in a world of trouble if you ever get pulled over.If you have an accident? Let's just say you'll be telling yourself "I shouldn't have gotten outta bed this morning"
