I was driving down the freeway today and the car in front of me had two bumper stickers, one on top of the other. The top one said "I love my German Shepherd!" and the bottom one said "Pope Benedict XVI"

The car was in front of me for a couple minutes in the freeway traffic and got off at my offramp. I thought that the bumper sticker combination was interesting. I ran my errands and, 20 minutes later, was returning to my office when the same car moved ahead of me into my lane, got onto the freeway and got off at the same offramp.

Coincidence? I THINK NOT!! So does it all mean? German Shepherds? The Pope? Is he leading the sheep? Is this a message from up on high?

Simple answer: Roman Catholics consider the Pope "their Shepherd" (i.e. leader of the flock of faithful believers). As Pope Benedict XVI is German, that makes him "The German Shepherd".

>>German Shepherds? The Pope? Is he leading the sheep?<<

Jesus told the Apostle Peter, "Feed my lambs...tend my sheep... feed my sheep" (John 21:15-17). The Pope is the successor of Peter (see Acts 1:15-26 for Apostolic Succession). The Pope is also German, so it is a humorous play on those "I love my (type of dog)" stickers.

Both Jesus and the Apostles described the roles of church leaders as shepherds.

In John chapter 10, Jesus call himself the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep.

The crosier, or shepherd's staff, is the traditional symbol of bishops. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crozier

And, for Catholics, the Pope is the chief shepherd of the Church on Earth.

Well, he was in the Hitler Youth during the war.

Maybe it's a sign to keep this man's background in mind when you think of him as the spiritual leader of eight hundred million Catholics.

Out of all the available and qualified Cardinals, the Vatican chose this man, an ex-nazi, to lead them.

I don't get it......
