i have to know! why people diss the bible like its ALL trash. i understand that some parts of the bible can seem very hypocritical to the non christian. thats fine. i also understand that some part of the bible are completely outragious to the non christian. that fine too. but can you at leasst admit that there is alot of wisdom in the bible. look at the book of proverbs. "money is the root of all evil" where do you think that came from? its from the bible as well as many other wise saying. And then there is jesus. dont diss him either! i never once read something where jesus said to kill someone! in fact he said dont stone the women who commited adultry. Jesus was the bigest liberal of his time! I can understand not believing he is the son of god but why treat him like his is all evil.

Regardless of whether you can spell or type or whatever someone else had to comment on, I agree with your thought completely. Since most of our technological advances have come about in the last 150 years, that would mean that approximately 5,000 or so years ago, when it is said that the Old Testament was written, people weren't so smart. Still, someone managed to fill pages and pages of a book with wisdom that has been tried and true for centuries.
One thing people can't understand is that the Bible is supposed to contradict itself. The Old Testament is pretty much the opposite of the New Testament. In the Old Testament people had to follow a set of laws or die or get some other harsh punishment. In the New Testament we get Jesus who stands in our place because He died for our sins so that we don't have to endure the pain or death that should be ours.
The reason people get so pissy about it is because they don't understand how it works. Besides the fact that they need to SEE everything to believe it. Makes me wonder if they are able to love anyone since they can't SEE that.

It is probably a reaction to all the people who say, "Either the entire Bible is the word of God or it is not." That kind of black-or-white presentation is pretty much throwing down a gauntlet regarding believing the Bible.

But to speak more to your point about selecting wisdom where it appears: The wisdom found in the Bible is not unique. Jesus teachings are not unique, either. The Bible has the biggest grip on the publicity because of Christianity's size dominance, but it's filled with elements that describe God (the topic of its story, remember) as neither appealing nor kind. Even Jesus speaks of people being sent to hell in both parables and discussions.

And just because Jesus may have been a liberal for his time, that was 2000 years ago in the bronze age where he was speaking to a small sect that was under military occupation. This hardly calls out for parallel kinship to the current age any more than does the Gilgamesh epic.

Ok, Well.. here's the thing. If your going to try to get some answers you want to hear, then maybe you should start by showing that Christianity and the bible are peaceful.

THIS QUOTE THAT YOU STATED ABOVE.... I want you to tell me, while you are being ignorant towards others religions and its pretty obvious you are trying to point towards Islam, how can you expect someone to tolerate any of the things you said in your question???

You just contradicted all of Christianity in that not thought out statement. First of all..
Islam doesn't say to KILL.. it says to ONLY fight someone when they are harming you and is strictly against killing of innocent. For the people who do it are making their own interpretation of Islam.

And as far as I know, adultery is a sin in Christianity also.

You don't want hate??? Then don't breed it !

Because people choose to create their own way of thinking and life choices in order to feel like they are in control. To give credit to the Bible, more importantly Jesus, is hard for those who have never believed that their lives actually had a purpose. To have a sense of respect for age old wisdom would mean people would have to change actions that go against what it actually says. Like you said, it has many pieces of common sense wisdom that could change a person's life if they really chose to listen and follow. The key to understanding the Bible is to allow yourself to freely acknowledge the fact that we as humans need a moral guide and that it is selfish to think that our lives were created to run rampant at whatever we want to do. Why wouldn't anyone want to abide by such decent civilized "advice"? How in such a "primitive" time when the Bible was written does it still apply today" Well, it's the word of God and like it or not, it has meaning and purpose in order to better all of our lives. It will never fail.

The bible is not the only book that imparts wisdom and guidance. Many other books can do it just as well if not better. Yet Christians still seem to think that only the bible is the word of god and if you don't believe in it you go to hell. I don't need that kind of stress.

Why diss the people who don't believe the same things you do?

Especially whats your name eelfins or something like that. You just made it clear you think you know everything about atheists, clearly you don't know very much at all but your own prejudices.

Sorry if I sound rude but I'm sick of people assuming they know everything about atheists like we're some sort of pre-made mold and we're all exactly the same. We are all different just like every other group of people in the world is different. Not ALL od us "dis" the bible.

peace out.

Here's some questions in response to your question.

1) Why are you using the word 'diss'?
2) Have you actually read the bible?
3) Matthew 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Jesus did spend a considerable amount of time saying who would be going to hell. (Which of course means anyone who doesn't obey him or agree with him gets to burn forever.)

For me it has something to do with the fact that Christians are trying to force the Bible on us. They're trying to make religion mandatory in US public schools, they're trying to ban gay marriage, and President Bush even said he went to war with Iraq because "Gold told him" to.

And if you're going to look for wisdom and spirituality, I recommend Eastern philosophy books over the Bible any day.
