Treat it like any other burn.
New sunburns
If it's really bad - buy some burn creme/spray at the drug store.
If it's just a bit red - Aloe Vera gel (green stuff) found in a ny drug store.
Old peeling sunburns: wear loose clothes, stay out of the sun.

Drinking lots of water will hasten the healing, drink about 8 oz (a soda can is 12 oz, for comparison) every hour. This will flush the burn toxins out of your body and help your feel better. You will still be sore and a little red if it's a bad burn
For applying to the skin, there's lots of good ideas from the other posters, especially Lidocaine, Noxzema and aloe.

Prevention! Avoid it. But we all know thats easier said than done. LOL
Moisturize, use a lidocaine and aloe gel. It will cool and reduce the pain.

Stay out of the sun for awhile and it will go away.
There's really no way to rush it though...sorry.
Try aloe vera and toothpaste to stop the burning though.
