I had this problem--at work they leave out tons of candy. Eating sweets makes you crave sweets. Cold turkey is the way to go.
1. Get rid of all sweets in your house.
2. Try to avoid sweets at work/school if you can--if they are left out, plan routes around them so you never see them.
3. Make a real mental commitment to not eat candy. I made a New Year's resolution to not eat the free candy at work, and stuck to it. After a while it stopped being tempting, because I started to ignore it--it's like it was for other people, not for me.
4. Minimize refined carbs in the rest of your diet--white rice, white bread, potatoes, bagels, sweet sauces, etc. Stick to whole wheat as much as you can.
After a while your cravings will diminish. In the meantime, drink water, snack on nuts or fruit, and tell yourself that you're doing a good thing.

I either get rid of the sweets so I can't have them or I eat fruits like strawberries and peaches that are naturally sweet. This sounds kinda weird but if I get a craving for chocolate I chew Orbit or Trident gum (usually mint). I don't know why but it works for me!! Remember, it's ok to have sweets once in awhile but it's all about self-control.

try to look away so as not to be tempted... drink water instead. my parents are both diabetic and they both have intense cravings for sweets which are not good for them. so , they eat other things such as vegetables and fruits. although fruits are also sweet, i believe you are referring to sweets like chocolate, candies, cakes, etc... (which are also the things my parents want, hihi)... =)
so, just drink water to somehow fill your stomach or eat something else... or divert your attention to some activities like watching tv (not the cooking channel, of course, where they display or televise ways of cooking cakes, brownies, etc... for this will just make you crave for more sweets... )
so, good luck in controlling yourself for craving sweet foods... it's just a matter of self-discipline. you need not be a pro for this. just be optimistic and teach yourself a thing or two about self-control. coz you will just soon realize that you have indeed controlled or prevented the craving. you will learn to understand the value of other great food rather than the sweet stuff. you'll also learn or discover things that you have to do to avoid the craving for sweets by experimenting on yourself as to how or what will make you divert your attention away from sweets. again, good luck and may you have a success in controlling this craving.

nicely each and every time i crave some thing sweet i basically make some oatmeal, the prepackaged variety that's accessible in numerous flavors like cinnamon, apple and so on it tastes sooo reliable and sweet and its fairly healthful for you! or i basically get a small cup and pour some cereal (honey bunches of oats, my well-known) and basically munch on that. or you could basically try chewing slightly of gum or eating a lollipop. I do all of those issues to regulate my cravings. reliable success! inspite of you try no longer to eat too a lot junk nutrition considering that its basically empty energy and contributes no longer some thing in route of helping you shed some pounds.

by drinking a tall glass of water or low fat milk. Cravings for food only last 10 minutes. If you can occupy yourself for 10 min. your body will stop craving it.

When it's really bad, I drink a glass of water with fresh lemon or orange squeezed into it, or I eat a mandarin or orange.
Or I eat a couple of tic tacs. Reducing your sweets slowly is better than going cold turkey.
I heard they have made a tablet you can take that stops you from tastig anything sweet. ask your doctor for more information.

avoid salt. Salt makes you crave the sweets.... they go hand in hand. but you know they make those m&m minis. Why not get those and allow yourself like 10 of them a day rather than deny yourself the treat. That way you get what you want without over doing it.....

I suggest you don't try to control the craving but what you actually do put in your mouth, which could be sweet substitutes.
