Meditation is nothing more than the deep concentration of a person on a singular subject to a degree so as to cause all other stimuli to dissolve around the meditator. basicly, you think on a single subject until you are not affected by any other stimulus.

This is not to be confused with "Trancendental Meditation", which is a Middle Eastern New Age religious practice (that is tied to a myriad of religions from zen to yoga, and is prevalent in the religious practices from India) bent on taking the meditator to "altered states of consciousness" and "higher planes of existence" These religious practice uses "spirit guides" to help you along your way, and has been known to be very dangerous those that have dabbled in it at the urging of some teacher or friend claiming "enlightenment".

Meditation itself, however is something that even Jesus did.

Do I think it can help a teen? Of course. The action of absolute concentration and reflection tends to help a person make more rational decisions when crunch time comes along and something has to be decided on the fly. Your brain often times will have worked through problems and will learn to be more decisive because it will be accustomed to following a certain method of processing, and often times, you will find you have thought deeply about important subjects and came up with solutions.

Meditation times will vary from one person to another, and from one session to another. There are times that I meditate for 15 to 30 minutes, and sometimes I have been known to meditate on a subject for hours. It just depends on you at the time.

Hope this helps...

yes, it really could. It helps anyone who uses it. Teens have alot of pressure and stress, and having a way to step back from your emotions seems like a really good idea, doesn't it?

Best to read a little on it, you might try this site:
http://www.tm.org/
this site will answer lots of questions, answers that are too lengthy for YA. But suffice to say, it will boost your immune system, reduce stress, add to your intelligence... all good things.
TM is transcendental meditation, created for the western mind by a brilliant yogi.
You can get a CD on Ebay for about $12.00- I suggest you have something to listen to as a guided practice-to try and just sit down and meditate is really hard, and people tend to get frustrated and give up when they are winging it on their own.
as for time-see how it goes for you. You may only be comfortable with 5 minutes to start with.

EDIT: have to respond to simple man of god's statements.....
to say with certainty that which is not true, as in TM is dangerous, and that you have to use spirit guides is just absurd, and irresponsible. There is no use to promoting more fear.......

Yes, absolutely.

If you require a beginner's guide on meditation, please try a bookstore. My response would be too lengthy on this subject. A few basic yoga stretches would also be be good for you.

Start with short sessions up to 15 minutes, if you like. Your relaxation and capacity to concentrate will improve after you have tried a few times so be patient with yourself. One day you will be an adult and will be thankful you gave yourself a head start to experience the benefits of meditation. All the best.

It can be useful in many situations - relaxing after a tough day, preparing yourself for a difficult task (say a term paper), or even a source of guidance when you are searching for an answer...

How long is really up to you - the best guideline is as long as you need... Start simple - like five minutes to simply clear your head.

I do it about 10 to 15 minutes, but I'm hoping to elongate that as soon as I can sit still that long. It really helps me, and I'm a teen ;-).

Blessed be.
