OM (or more accurately, AUM) is the profound, sacred syllable representing Brahman, the impersonal Absolute of Hinduism, the source of all manifest existence.
The three sounds, A, U and M, represent three states of consciousness. It is used as a mantra (prayer) and in blessings in daily life.
Very briefly, A (pronounced like the "A" in accounting) represents the waking state. U (pronounced like the "U" in would) represents the dream state and M (pronounced as in sum) represents the deep sleep state. This could also be considered as the past, the present and the future. It is also a symbol of the duality of the unknowable and what can be known.
It is said that by chanting OM, you create vibrations that correspond to the original vibration that first arose at the time of creation.

Ooommm, is part of a Buddhist chant, or mantra...it goes Ohm nammyoho renge kyo...it literally means Buddha is sitting in the lotus flower, (it has sexual under tones, meaning he is in a woman's private parts, and at peace,) The chant is supposed to help you relieve tension, and help you achieve inner peace!

Its not so much the meaning as its a method of erasing thoughts from your mind. That is to say that its a tool for meditation and the basic idea of meditation is to clear your brain of concious thought.
