There's a lot of errors in credit reports. Due to frauds, human mistakes (from the banks, credit card companies, borrowers,...).

And there's strategic moves you can do to improve your credit score.

That's why some people are using credit repair agencies.

You answered your own question. They can not do anything legally that you can not do for very little cost or no cost. Your only cost is really just Paper, Stamps, envelopes to send the disputes. They basically prey on peoples lack of knowledge of how to view and dispute their credit information. Also, a lot of the Credit Reporting Agencies automatically ignore any dispute that comes from a 3rd person or company.

You first need to pull your credit report. You are allowed 1 free per year from each of the big 3(TransUnion, Experian, Equifax). To do this go to http://www.annualcreditreport.com .
Once you have your reports and if anything is incorrect you need to send a dispute to the credit agency. They offer On-Line disputes, but I still prefer to do it through Certified Mail. This way you can send any proof at the same time. If it is a vaild dispute they will correct/remove the information.

Below is a site with sample dispute letters. The addresses for each of the 3 are the following.
Equifax
P.O. Box 740241
Atlanta, GA 30374-0241

Experian
P.O. Box 2104
Allen, TX 75013-2104

TransUnion
P.O. Box 1000
Chester, PA 19022

You can order a report from the credit companies and dispute anything yourself they have 30 days to refute your dispute. or it is removed. There is no guarantee. Better off disputing yourself and then just
pay bills on time
Get your credit cards down to 30% of the limit
Do not close any cards that are paid off
Do not apply for any credit
There is no quick fix

If you feel that there are unjustified charges on your account - that you know you did not make contact the store involved first. Then contact the credit card co. and the credit bureaus.
If you have documentation that the items are false make copies and send to the co.
