dew claws are the equivalent of a dogs thumbnails. Normally they are not a problem, although they may need to be trimmed if they grow too long (which they do since they are not subjected to normal wear and tear). However, in some instances they can hang off at a strange angle and get caught on things and generally be a pain. If that happens, they can be removed with no future problems to the dog. The vet does it under anaesthetic, and the dog may need to wear an elizabethan collar to stop it chewing out the stitches. But otherwise not a problem.

Dogs should have their dews clipped off. They have little use and as puppies some breeders remove them routinely. Infection is the main culprit for dew pain. Vets for meds and removal of dew will end any more trouble

I have a chocolate lab that kept catching his dew claws when out on walks, i went to the vet and firstly they gave him antibiotics as there was a slight infection. The dog then ripped on nearly right off and i took him to hte vet and thye removed both due to the repeated problems.
Dogs don't really need them and if they are causing problems then the best course of acion is to have them removed before they cause themselves injury like my choc lab dd when he ripped one off.

All my dogs have had theres removed before I picked them up.
There was one that was left & had problems none stop.
You have to keep them trimmed on a regular basis @ the vets to keep things ok.
The problem I had was I got a bloody trainee, I will never forget the cut it the wrong end I was getting ready to throw up, my dog was screaming & blood was everywere, so from that day I always asked the breeder to remove them before I picked up.

Probably best to have them removed. Dogs (especially when young) bounce back very quickly! and it saves any more pain.

It is best to clip them off when the babies are about 2-3 days old. If your older dog is having problems with one, and vet can clip it off for you.

Go to vet and have it removed. It will not hurt the dog at all.
