PLEASE NEVER PURCHASE A PUPPY FROM A PET SHOP!

Pet shop dogs are supplied by Puppymills! A Puppymill is a place where there are tons of dogs in stacked metal cages. They are never let out, barely fed, have no human interaction, and breed until they are dead.
On rare occasions a few Shops buy from irreputable breeders. They are still horrible breeders and breed poor quality dogs. They don't care if the dog dies when breeding, they'll just get a new one to make more money!

If you buy a puppy from the shop you will contribute to money to the Puppymill. They will have to breed more and more puppies to replace the sold pups.

Most of these dogs have diseases. Our rescue received a puppy that was rescued when the police shut down a pet store. He had worms, kennel cough, and was in poor health.

It is horrible! I am begging you NOT to buy! Please, for the sake of the dogs in the supplying Puppymill!
I would petition the Pet Shop and either shut them down or get them to stop selling puppies. Don't buy any supplies from the Shop, they are making money and supporting them!!!

Please find a homeless puppy at http://www.petfinder.com instead! They are in shelters or rescue organizations like mine.

No pet store puppies are of any quality. Most come from puppy mills and the rest come from backyard breeders. You need to find a reputable breeder in your area and ask lots of questions. Do they offer a health guarantee? Do they test their breeding stock for genetic defects like Progressive retinal atrophy, hip and elbow dysplasia, and thyroid production? What happens if I cannot keep the puppy anymore? Will you take it back.

Reputable breeders also do not always have puppies available. They selectively breed, perhaps once or twice a year. They test every dog for genetic defects BEFORE it is bred. They compete in conformation, obedience, agility, mushing, or field trials. They have quality animals. Each dog receives excellent medical attention, are groomed regularly, and eat healthy premium dog foods. The personal space for each animal is kept clean and sanitary.

You will not get a puppy from a pet store that has most of those conditions met in its lineage. Most pet store puppies have health issues within months of purchase, but no guarantee to fall back on. I am not trying to preach at you, but you really want a healthy puppy, I'm sure.

The most important thing is the health guarantee. Make sure that you get it in writing. Make sure that it covers all genetic defects and that you get one of three options:

a full refund,
a replacement puppy or
reimbursement for treatment costs (up to the purchase price)

They are not. Puppies sold by pet stores usually come from puppy mills. Not only do you stand a good chance of getting a puppy that is not in good health but you help puppy mills stay in business.

Go to a shelter or a rescue instead.

There is no such thing as a good puppy from a pet store.
98% of puppies from pet stores are from puppy mills.
The other 2% from irresponsible backyard breeders.
If you got a puppy from a pet store, click here to see his/her parents.

Go to their page on "How to Buy a Dog".
Great advice there.

you are always best buying from a breeder. those who sell to petshops rather puppymills or backyard breeders aren't breeding for temperment or health just to overbreed and make money.
