I thought the legal age was 21 for all states, but then I found this government website.
http://alcoholpolicy.niaaa.nih.gov/index.asp?Type=BAS_APIS&SEC={5FAC6464-DD33-408F-A20E-D0611E93DE31}&DE={527EFF01-B475-4F3F-999A-F9B6B8BAFF30}
It was updated in 2006 and it says that theres no prohibition. As far as I know, you have to be 21. My girlfriend used to have people that were 21 drive from Connecticut to New York on Sundays to buy alcohol (package stores are closed in Connecticut on Sunday.) We just assumed you had to be 21, we've never tried purchasing it ourselves, however.

Ok, so thanks for the answers those who actually went to this website.

Maybe I should have added this- what the hell does that map imply when it says theres no prohibition? Two of you said that theres exceptions for religions ceremonies and such, but that isn't for New York. The exceptions applied to several other states, but New York is marked as No Prohibition.

It would appear from your website that someone under 21 can legally purchase alcohol in the state of New York. This causes an interesting legal problem since it is not legal for a person under 21 to possess alcohol in most states. Since you cannot purchase something without gaining possession, I am not sure how this works out legally.

If you are 21, you can purchase alcohol in any state. There are certain regulations about the types of alcohol that can be sold and the days and times that alcohol can be legally sold. I live in Minnesota where alcohol sales in liquor stores must end at 10 PM and liquor cannot be sold on Sunday (beer and wine can). We used to drive to North Dakota, where laws are much less stringent (except no sale is allowed on Sunday) to purchase alcohol late at night (stores can sell until 2 AM). It really depends on the particular state and the rules in that state.

Did you read the info you are referencing? You must be 21 in order to buy and consume alcohol legally in NY.

The exceptions appear to be about religious ceremony, police operations(stings) or other like buying it for cooking school or some other happy horses.h.i.t.

I dont recommend you try to buy booze. There is plenty of time to drink when you turn 21. Dont hasten the hangover. They are not fun.

Looks like the "exceptions" are for such instances when a minor buys it as part of a police sting, or for certain sacramental purposes in religious ceremonies. For all practical purposes, you can't buy it until you're 21.
