42" Panasonic HDTV Plasma from Sears. They have it on sale right now!

For $1300 you can get a pretty decent 42" plasma. Don't compromise on quality for size though. Samsung HPS4253 which is a 2006 model you should be able to get in this range. Also, Hitachi 42HDT79 would be a great option.

Good choice not to buy online. Try a retail store where the salespeople work on commission. You accomplish 2 things. You are more apt to get a deal on the TV and you will recieve more personalized service.

Don't mind that fool who says not to buy plasma. It is a great technology that will you will love for a very long time. Plasma can be expensive to repair...but all digital TV will cost you a lot if it breaks. The only reason not to go plasma is if you will be playing A LOT of video games, or if you will have a PC hooked up to the TV.

The best middle line plasma would be a Panasonic plasma.

Samsungs and Philips are one in the same. Both have the highest failure rates with poor support and high parts.

I would rather buy a quality unit the first time, than buy a tv that breaks in 8months and has to go through the run around with the company to do something, or a year later when its no longer under warranty.

Panasonic has really good support. Next Day service on their plasmas I believe if something happens.

Just remember, you want quality.

When you buy a tv at a discount store (walmart, cosco, etc) your just asking for trouble just buying from them. Places like those dont sell quality units.

If you plan on getting a Samsung plasma or a Philips Plasma, you might as well get a Sanyo Plasma all the parts are the same, all made by Samscum.

The best place to buy a plasma t.v. would be Costco. The reason is that you can take it back for any reason within 6 months and get your money back with no questions asked. I bought a Phillips 32" for around 1300 a year ago. Definately get a digital HDTV. Love it.

You may well want to check out another technology: DLP front projection which produces a movie-like experience of HD television, DVDs, videos and games. And according to Consumer Reports, "front projection has a superior image -- better than CRT's, LCDs or 'plasma'."

Check out the reviews for a "92" DLP generated [front projection] TV image at amazon.com by submitting the search query: "Infocus SP4805." There are any number of customer submitted pictures of projected HDTV image(s) along with other high-quality regular DVD-movie images projected on bare white wall surfaces. And the price for a refurbished ScreenPlay 4805 is about $325 with lamps costing around $330 which will last around 4,000 hours. Also check out various reviews at Consumer Reports [November 2005 & December 2006] in which front projection is rated "superior" to plasma, lcd.

Good luck!
