It tends to be a vocal minority who hold that "literalist" view. Honestly, those who focus so much on the less-than-6000-years fail to realize that the creation story is a 2-page summary stating that it happened. It doesn't say how, at all.
Did we get on the Moon merely because JFK spoke it? To be sure, he set a goal and a deadline, but in order to achieve that goal, many people had to work hard to develop materials and invent technologies. We had countless tests and failures. People DIED along the way. The sacrifice was great, yet the summary is the same: JFK said we would be on the Moon by the end of the decade and was done.

The validity of the existence of God vs the validity of evolution depends on where you look, and HOW you look. Evolution is based totally in the physical realm of time and space and science is at peace with it since science can only accept as theory that which it can prove.
God is eternal and cannot be subject to testing and scrutiny. God designed it to be that way for the purpose of free will choice. To see which you desire to cling to for your personal doctrine of origin. The problem is, upon death you go from the physical to the eternal, and there, all that you concluded regarding evolution, will be of no value. Remember Esau and do not trade your destiny for a bowl of beans.
"The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness?" - 2 Peter 3

I believe in the Bible, I believe the earth is millions to possibly billions of years old. I believe in the creation as written in the bible, but see people interpret the story very differently. So I don't believe man descended from anything but from man. And no that does not conflict with the Bible.

The theory of evolution contradicts the bible. The whole message of the bible is of Jesus saving man from sin. In the theory of evolution there is no basis for believing that there is sin.

Honestly, we cannot say how old the earth really is. I really don't think it's 6000 years old. But I think that is where things started for man. Some believe the Dinosaurs were first, then came man. Some believe that man and dinosaurs existed. Me? I'm still looking it over.

Genisis agrees with the theory of the Big Bang. Even the Pope believes in the Big Bang and that the universe is 4.5 billion years old. The Creationists (NOT CHRISTIANS) believe the 6000 year B.S.

I believe in evolution. Most cultures, including the early Jewish one, used creation myths as a way to explain their existence. Remember, these were not real sophisticated people.
