Is it all based on genes, do you need a certain vitamin..why is it that one person can go out in the sun for like 10 minutes and get really dark, while others stay pale no matter what they do?

Melanin makes your skin darken. Darker complected races carry more melanin in their genes others.

yes, it does depend on genetics. your genetics affect how much melanin (skin pigment) is in your skin. the more you have, the darker your natural skin tone, and the more likely you are to tan. If you are of Northern European (say, Swedish) descent, you are less likely to tan than someone from Southern European descent (like Greek).

I think it definitely helps if you use tanning oil it attracts the sun and you won't get sunburned, unless you are out there for a really long time. Duh! Also what kind of suntan lotion you use. I would use a 15SPF if you are tanning but stronger if not.

It's the pigmentation of the person that affects tanning results.
