There are no good pet stores to buy a puppy from. They are all shady, sell puppies from puppymills and charge a fortune for them. Look for a responsible breeder.

When you buy from a petstore you are taking risks with the puppy's health. No dog at a pet store is from a reputable breeder- usually a puppy mill or a backyard breeder at best.
If you want a dog you are sure has the best genetic chance of being healthy= then pick a breed and find reputable breeders in the area (I am not advocating this- just telling you a pet store dog has the same genetic chance of being healthy as a shelter dog).
If you just want a cute puppy then save yourself the petstore price tag and go to the local animal shelter. Save a life and don't support irresponsible breeding...

Most pet store puppies are from backyard breeders or puppy mills. If you want a good pet that will be healthy and live a decently long life, go to a reputable breeder. Check out the lines and find out if your new pet will come with a health guarantee (one year is standard, but many have a two year guarantee against genetic defects like progressive retinal atrophy, hip and elbow dysplasia). Find out what the guarantee entails, like payment for treatment of any genetic defect, replacement puppy, or refund. Check out my site and make sure that any puppy you buy comes with a similar guarantee. howlingnorthkennels.com

Unless you really need or want a specific breed why not adopt a dog or puppy from you local animal shelter. Also look in the classifies adds as you may find people giving away puppies. (BTW if you never have owned a dog before, you will quickly learn why people say there is no such thing as a free puppy.) Good luck and enjoy.

NO pet stores, they just don't give them the love and open space they need and some spend months in a glass cage before being bought. Many of them have issues with paranoia or aggression later as a result.
Go buy a paper and find a breeder. They are cheaper that way anyways!!! Ask LOTS of questions so you know you aren't getting a dog that has been mistreated in ANY way and they aren't coming from a puppymill.
Do your research it pays off.

Don't buy from any pet store! The puppies are often from puppy mills just trying to make a buck. These puppies often come with health problems and complications. Research what kind of dog that you like, and that you are compatible with, and then find a reputable breeder that you can buy from! Good luck!!

Don't buy from a petshop or puppy boutique. If theres a particular breed your looking for check out petfinder or your local shelter.Buying from a petstore or from the news paper is just supporting PM(Puppymills) and BYB(backyard breeders).Google puppymills and check out the dogs...These are the parents of the puppy stores! Awful, just awful. In rescue you see a great many things but, after 'visiting' a 'breeder' in Lancaster I will never forget the looks on those dogs faces, the smell, the condition they were kept in and yes,the smell of death, decomposing puppies in a barrel!!.Awful just awful. Not to mention, the genetic problems, health problems that buying a puppy from a place that supplies these pups to brokers who in turn sell them to the petshops.

PetsMart has an adoption center in the store on the weekends. They bring in animals from local shelters for people to see. You could try there, or from one of the shelters near where you live. You could also try a breeder, but the prices will run you through the roof.

the pound. i got my lab there and he is probably one of the best dogs ever. if i didn't take him hed be put to sleep. why get a dog from a store when you can get the same type, for a much cheaper price and maybe even save its life? i paid $7.50 for my dog, if i bought him from a pet store it'd have cost me hundreds of dollars. oh i know your looking for a cute little puppy, the pound has those too. when i got my dog where was a handful of puppies for me to choose from. pound or not theres no difference, they are still just as cute and great to have.
