When we want to get rid of body fat, there is no way to specifically burn fat from one part of the body. Doing situps won't burn the fat that is covering your abs and doing tricep extensions won't get rid of the fat that is covering your triceps. The only thing you can do is lose weight all around and eventually the problem area will also improve. The way to burn fat is through a calorie restricted diet in conjunction with an exercise routine that will burn calories. Activities that burn calories include running, biking, swimming and other high intensity activities.

you cant spot reduce body fat so it has to be overall weight (fat) loss
find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Not only do you need high intensity workouts like running, swimming, etc...you also need some strength training as well. I am not speaking of competitive weightlifting, but some small amount of weight to give your muscles a jolt. Not only will you burn calories, but they will burn a lot quicker when your muscles are involved. Start situps as normal but as time goes by, use small weights to give resistance. This will force your stomach muscles to work a little more and shed more pounds. It is always best to strength train first and then do your high intensity running, swimming or whatever it is you decide you would like to do. Good Luck!!!

In addition to the calorie restricted diet, cardio cardio and more cardio helps shed pounds and inches. Ideas other than running are the stairmaster, elliptical, aerobics, jump roping, and cardio kickboxing just to name a few.
