It shouldn't do, but it is possible for things to go wrong. Take a backup first just in case.

It shouldn't erase all of your songs, extraordinarily in the journey that they are from itunes. i imagine there is a few thing you could do to get them again in the journey that they do get erased besides... Ohh and in case you plug on your iTouch it would want to placed all of your song again on in the journey that your song receives deleted?

I have updated my itunes a few times and my files were retained.

as long as you keep your songs on your computers hard drive you can always reinstall the songs you want on.

It doesn't delete any of your songs, playlists, album covers, movies...everything is stored elsewhere.
