Well I have a three year old english springer spaniel, he is very playfull and overall a very good playmate to my two year old, however whenever he gets upset he goes under the bed and if you walk by or call him he'll start growling. Also he is always trying or steling food from the table. I love him but sometimes he acts like an idiot like I never feed him , always acting hungry or begging when in reallity he eats a good amount . What should I do to correct this?

First off is he getting upset and going under the bed when he is in trouble by you ? How do you discipline your dog? Physical punishment is going to cause a fear response aka hiding under the bed and growling. Consistency is what is needed . A firm no every time he is caught should be sufficient . If the dog is begging someone is or has given him table scraps this has to stop if the begging bothers you and to teach him to go lay down would help as well, or put him outside while you are eating .

First thing I would recommend is that you train this dog to wait for his food. He needs to understand that it is all your food and that you are sharing it with him.

Technique: keep all food out of his reach at all times. Make the dog sit while you hold a handful of food. Get your smell all over it. Keep him in a sit stay while you hand feed him several kibbles. Then tell him to "WAIT" until you are ready to give him the bowl of food. Put the bowl down. If he makes a move toward the bowl tell him to "WAIT" again. Put your hand into the bowl and make sure that your scent is all over the food. Then say "OK" when he is allowed to have the food. Do this every day for a while, and he should get the hint.

Second, the growling. This is problematic. There could be any number of reasons for this behaviour. Never strike the dog, no matter what. The best correction method I know is tugging the scruff.

Technique: Rover has just gone under the bed and started growling at you. Do NOT stick your face down and make eye contact. He may bite you. Put a broom handle or something under the bed to nudge the dog out (gently). Once you have him out pet and praise him if he is being sane. If he is being a menace, grab a large section of the scruff of his neck, and without actually moving the dog, shake that neck skin firmly, but gently. This mimics the corrective maneuver mother dogs use on unruly pups. The action must be done right when the dog misbehaves or the effect is lost. Also you must be consistent in discipline. If it is wrong once, it is always wrong. If you are consistent, he will "get it" eventually.

I have to tell you, almost every dog I know begs, regardless of how well fed they are. You have to train them to lie down and stay during meals, but that sounds like its going to be a tough thing for you to do, I don't think you have that much experience, no offense. The "down/stay" combination is usually learned ealier in life, but your dog can still learn at 3 years, may take longer, and has to be done by a pro. Watch how they train and learn from example.

His going under the bed is a denning instinct, a safe retreat, and he growls because he thinks his space is being invaded. This dog needs a lot of work and unless you are willing to take him to classes led by an experienced professional, things aren't going to get better for you. I also agree that he needs more exercise, outdoor retrieving [tennis balls are great] and lots of running.

It's not the dog that sucks. A dog is only as good as its owner and how that owner trets it and trains it. Dogs take time. You can't expect a dog to be perfect without some work. Try attending some behavior classes at your local PETCO or PETSMART.

If you continue to think your dog sucks than find it to a loving home.

Watch the Dog Whisperer. This guy is great, he really understands dogs and can help you get rid of unwanted problems. I've been using his techniques with my two border collies for over a year now. All the problems I used to have are gone!

when hes under the bed just leave him there he will come to you when hes ready! and the food stealing thing i would suggest locking him out of that room while you eat.when i 1st got my puppy he used to beg and all i kept saying was "out" not shouting just in a firm low voice! and in the end he got the message, now i only say it once and he goes out the room and waits for me to call him back in.

oh and to the 1st answer what are you gonna report her for ? trying to train her dog ?!!

Try training. Reinforce the positive behaviors that he does have.
